Released in January 1977, Animals marked a darker, more politically charged turn for Pink Floyd. Drawing loose inspiration from George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the album casts society into three archetypes—dogs, pigs, and sheep—to critique the growing divide in mid-70s Britain. Its five extended tracks take on a heavier, more aggressive tone, driven by Roger Waters’ increasingly dominant songwriting and conceptual vision.

The record was created at the band’s newly built Britannia Row Studios in London, where internal tensions simmered—particularly between Waters and keyboardist Richard Wright, who would leave the group two years later. Animals was the first album for which the band didn’t release any singles, instead relying on the ambitious In the Flesh tour for promotion. The infamous inflatable pig floating over Battersea Power Station on the cover (designed by Storm Thorgerson and Waters) became one of rock’s most iconic images.

While initial critical reception was divided, Animals has since been re-evaluated as one of Pink Floyd’s most powerful works—a leaner, more caustic counterpart to Wish You Were Here and a direct precursor to The Wall.
