From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Ghost Wars and The Achilles Trap, the epic and enthralling story of America's intelligence, military, and diplomatic efforts to defeat Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan since 9/11

Prior to 9/11, the United States had been carrying out small-scale covert operations in Afghanistan, ostensibly in cooperation, although often in direct opposition, with I.S.I., the Pakistani intelligence agency. While the US was trying to quell extremists, a highly secretive and compartmentalized wing of I.S.I., known as "Directorate S," was covertly training, arming, and seeking to legitimize the Taliban, in order to enlarge Pakistan's sphere of influence. After 9/11, when fifty-nine countries, led by the U. S., deployed troops or provided aid to Afghanistan in an effort to flush out the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the U.S. was set on an invisible slow-motion collision course with Pakistan.

Today we know that the war in Afghanistan would falter badly because of military hubris at the highest levels of the Pentagon, the drain on resources and provocation in the Muslim world caused by the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and corruption. But more than anything, as Coll makes painfully clear, the war in Afghanistan was doomed because of the failure of the United States to apprehend the motivations and intentions of I.S.I.'s "Directorate S". This was a swirling and shadowy struggle of historic proportions, which endured over a decade and across both the Bush and Obama administrations, involving multiple secret intelligence agencies, a litany of incongruous strategies and tactics, and dozens of players, including some of the most prominent military and political figures. A sprawling American tragedy, the war was an open clash of arms but also a covert melee of ideas, secrets, and subterranean violence.

Coll excavates this grand battle, which took place away from the gaze of the American public. With unsurpassed expertise, original research, and attention to detail, he brings to life a narrative at once vast and intricate, local and global, propulsive and painstaking.

This is the definitive explanation of how America came to be so badly ensnared in an elaborate, factional, and seemingly interminable conflict in South Asia. Nothing less than a forensic examination of the personal and political forces that shape world history, Directorate S is a complete masterpiece of both investigative and narrative journalism.

Gorgeous & so soft!
Size: 50"x60", Color: Olive Green
This is hands down the most beautiful throw I’ve ever had. It’s so soft & luxurious on both sides, which is hard to find. It’s warm but not too warm ,just perfect! I got the olive green & it’s a beautiful shade, not too yellow or muddy. I don’t know why people report shedding issues, I wonder if there were some bad batches? Mine hasn’t shed at all. Just washed it for the first time, came out perfect. No lint at all in dryer screen.

For a luxurious throw,
Size: 50"x60", Color: Grey
I originally bought this throw just to have something cozy around the house—and I was immediately impressed with how unbelievably soft it is. After owning (and loving) a lot of blankets, I’ve realized most only have that plush, silky feel on one side. This one is different—it’s soft on both sides, with a weight and drape that feels genuinely luxurious. The dark gray color is another standout. It looks elevated and expensive, and it’s held up beautifully through multiple washes without losing that silky texture at all. It honestly feels just as soft as the day we got it, which is rare. But the reason I had to write this review is unexpected. We’ve been sleep training our almost 1.5-year-old son, and this blanket somehow became part of the routine. It lives in his room, draped over the rocking chair for those long middle-of-the-night wakeups. Over time, he started pulling it down and choosing to sleep on top of it… on the floor. We couldn’t tell if he preferred the floor—or the blanket. So I tried something: I put the throw on his bed. And just like that… he started sleeping in his bed. Apparently, this blanket is the key to sleep training. If you’re looking for something soft, durable, and genuinely cozy, this is already a great buy. But if you happen to have a toddler resisting bedtime… this might just be your secret weapon too.

Very soft. Wash only on gentle cycle in cold water and low tumble dry. Fabulous blanket.
Size: 50"x60", Color: Orange
So far so good. It was a little sheddy at first but then I washed it and it was fine. It is super soft even after being washed twice. Several people have commented on how soft it is and stated they thought it was a Minky couture. I washed it on gentle cycle in cold water and dried it on gentle low tumble dry. It does not seem to be shedding now. I washed it a second time and put vinegar in the rinse cycle because supposedly that is supposed to help bind the fibers or something. Still seems to be not shedding. It's probably the softest blanket I have every owned. When I wash it, I will continue to wash it on gentle in cold water and dry on either gentle low tumble dry r just air fluff. I read the heat good make the fibers loose and cause more shedding. If anything changes, I will update.

Quality of fabric may be less plush.
Size: 50"x60", Color: Tan
Very soft and plush blanket, although it not as thick and heavy as previously purchased in another color (same brand) it’s still a nice blanket.
