artist biography
Oscar Laurentius Jonsson,was born 20 August 1895 in Väse Värmland. He was a Swedish painter, illustrator and conservator.

Jonsson studied at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1917 to 1919 and at Wilhelmson's and Althin's målarskolor (painting school). He took subsequent private study trips to France in 1921, Denmark in 1931 and Norway in 1931, 1937 and 1952. During his stay in France, he was greatly impressed by André Lhote's cubism and medieval painting. 

Jonsson exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions. Select solo exhibitions include ones at Värmland Museum, Karlstad in 1937, 1938 and 1953. Group exhibitions include ones in Stockholm in 1934 and 1939 at Liljevalch's konsthall, in Gothenburg in 1950 at God konst (Good art) and in Karlstad from 1922 to 1927 with Värmländska konstnärs-förbundet (Värmland Artists' Association) and between 1938 and 1954 at Värmlands konstförening.

His work is characterised by a clear composition, with a slight cubist influence and has a clean, usually quite vibrant but well-balanced colour palette. Johnson painted landscapes, still-life and figurative works.

In addition to his painting he designed a number of posters and produced woodcut prints. As an illustrator, he produced book covers and he illustrated the book Smidda järnkors på Ekshärads kyrkogård  in 1939. He designed the forged crown for Karlstad's cathedral, which was produced by the goldsmith Thure Ahlgren. Between 1930 and 1937 he worked as a conservator working for Värmlands konserveringsanstalt. Among his public works are mural paintings at Ekshärad church, Kyrkerud's School, and the Central School in Avesta.

Examples of Jonsson’s work are held in the collection of the Värmland Museum and in Gustav VI Adolf's collection.

Johnson passed away in 1982.
