Georgian Garde Vous Cupid Pendant of 17k Gold and Painted Sepia

An exceptional Georgian pendant dating to circa 1800, masterfully designed as a large heart-shaped locket. The piece showcases intricate twisted wirework, exquisitely crafted in rich 17-karat gold, reflecting the refined artistry, sentimentality, and symbolic language of the period.

At its center is a finely executed en grisaille portrait of Cupid, depicted with one finger raised to his mouth in a quiet “shhh” gesture, with his bow placed below. This evocative image carries a deeply romantic meaning. In European art and symbolism, Cupid or Eros shown with a finger to his lips often alludes to secret, silent, or discreet love—an affection kept private, guarded, or unspoken. The bow resting below suggests passion momentarily stilled, contained, or already fulfilled. Together, the imagery forms a tender emblem of hidden devotion, restrained desire, and the intimate keeping of love’s confidence.

The portrait is accompanied by the French inscription “garde vous,” which may be understood as “take care,” “watch over yourself,” or “guard yourself.” Paired with the image of silent Cupid, the inscription enhances the pendant’s romantic and protective sentiment, suggesting both affection and discretion.

The reverse contains a carefully preserved plait of hair, an intimate and deeply personal element characteristic of Georgian sentimental jewelry. The pendant was ingeniously constructed as a lockable locket, with a small lock mechanism at the base of the piece. The locket can only be opened with its original key, which is now missing or may have been deliberately separated from the jewel over time. When opened with the key, the interior would reveal the plaited hair on one side and the painted Cupid portrait on the other, creating a private devotional or romantic keepsake concealed within the heart-shaped form.

Measuring approximately 3.25 inches from the top of the bail to the base and 0.9 inches in width, the pendant has a substantial weight of 18.25 grams, giving it a striking and elegant presence when worn. It remains in very good antique condition, with minor historical moisture residue visible on the reverse. Due to the absence of the key, the locket no longer opens.

Comparable examples can be found in important museum collections, including the British Museum’s Hull Grundy Collection, object no. 1978,1002.1202, where a similar locket is reputed to contain a lock of hair attributed to Marie Antoinette.
