The Ibanez Mode Series: A Modern Take on a Classic

The Ibanez "Mode" series represents a reimagining an iconic bass design. It's Ibanez's unique, modern take on a legendary instrument that has become ubiquitous across various musical genres. The Mode series honors the core elements that make this style of bass so popular, but injects contemporary features and aesthetics to support the creative endeavors of today's innovative players.

The Mode series is engineered to bridge the popular sounds of the past with the evolving future inspiration of modern bassists. Whether the gig calls for a traditional supporting role or a highly technical performance, the Mode Series is built to excel in both. Its playability and tonal versatility are ready to help any player create distinctive and memorable grooves.

All Mode (MDM) series basses feature a specially modified body, designed for perfect balance and smooth access to all 24 frets. Beyond the specialized body, the Super All Access neck joint further enhances playability with a highly contoured and ergonomic feel, ensuring even the highest frets are always within reach.

A thin C-profile neck provides a fast, fantastic-feeling playing experience, while rounded fretboard edges add another layer of playing comfort. The 1-piece Roasted Maple neck offers extreme stability and a rich appearance. Medium stainless steel frets provide snappy tonal response and make for clean bends and slides while offering superior long-term durability. The neck also features luminescent side dot markers to provide clear guidance when performing on dark stages.

The MDM1600 series basses feature a Poplar Burl top on an Alder body with a Rosewood fretboard. This combination offers a rich, well-balanced tone suitable for various playing styles. The Poplar Burl provides a modern, boutique aesthetic, and a detachable finger ramp is included to facilitate faster fingerstyle playing.

Featuring “Extra Super Duralumin” on some of the key components, Ibanez Aero-light tuners are some of the lightest yet most durable tuners on the market today.

The MR5S mono-rail bridge transfers each string vibration efficiently and delivers great clarity and sustain, which helps emphasize chordal playing and fast passages. It also features adjustable string spacing.

The 4-string models feature 19mm spacing and the 5 and 6-string models feature 18mm spacing.

The new Ibanez Delta S4J, S5J, and S6J pickups deliver an aggressive yet balanced single-coil tone that responds clearly and evenly in all frequency ranges. They’re voiced to cut powerfully through any mix while eliminating noise, thanks to their hum-canceling design.

These pickups are paired with the Sonitech S preamp, which offers a comprehensive range of tonal controls, including:

  • Master volume and balancer
  • Master Tone
  • 3-band EQ
  • An EQ bypass switch
  • A 3-way mid-frequency switch

The master tone control operates in both active and passive mode. Additionally, the 2-way Hexa mid system is located on the back of the bass, allowing you to choose between two different mid-frequency banks for a total of six selectable mid-frequency points. The higher bank frequencies are 350Hz, 600Hz and 1KHz, and the lower bank frequencies are 250Hz, 450Hz and 850Hz. Together, the Delta pickups and the Sonitech S preamp provide an exceptional level of versatility to suit a wide variety of musical and performance styles.

Interesting, but not empirically validated, and written explicitly for straight people (why?!)
Format: Kindle
This one’s the 500-pound gorilla of the healthy-couple self-help genre, with thirty years in print, scores of Oprah appearances by the authors, thousands of therapists practicing the Imago framework. The main thing that I need to tell you about this updated edition, from the year 2019, is that it does not mention or acknowledge the existence of queer or same-sex couples even one time. In fact, it really doubles down on the husband and wife stuff, takes gender roles pretty seriously, which is not a thing I realized we did anymore, except as a joke. Anyway, talking only to straight people is not too relevant to my interests, and while the conservative Christian viewpoint is pretty subtle in the advertising, just be aware of that PROBABLY NOT ACCIDENTAL omission going in, queer friends. (This is made even more impressive by the fact that the heart of the Imago approach is based on childhood trauma, about the ways in which our parents caused us to suppress or hide or ignore parts of ourselves in order to be accepted and loved. Just let that sink in, because I’ve been reading this book for the past week and I am still reeling from the irony that people who have been thinking for the past three decades about the ways that parents cause trauma to kids by failing to accept parts of them have missed the VERY OBVIOUS AND RELEVANT EXAMPLE of queer folks.) That aside, for me the book was a mixed-bag of some interesting and provocative ideas (I’d put these in the category of poetic notions, or interesting narrative ideas), alongside some really kooky 20th century neo-Freudian stuff (rooted in part in Freud’s theory of repetition compulsion.) I’m no fan of Freudian approaches, and after I started this book, I decided to see how empirically-validated this Imago approach is: based on what I found, there seems to be basically no evidence that this therapy is effective. Am I glad I read it? I think so?? It was thought-provoking, with the pretty significant grain of salt that there’s not much evidence to support that Imago therapy is much better than doing nothing at all. Also, I feel a little gross giving my money to relationship experts who (in 2019!!)) won’t even acknowledge the existence of queer people, even when doing so would obviously strengthen their core arguments and provide better examples than some of the meek ones they give.
