The project traces back to around 2018 2019, when Chris first came across a video of bangka races while digging through Facebook, running parallel to his Budots research and broader interest in Philippine subculture
Bancarera Boat Racing Vol. 1 is a visual zine on Filipino motorboat racing culture, with commentary by Chris Fussner and research, curation, and design by Bea Cruz, Olivia Oben, and Sasha Magallona, for Tropical Futures Institute (TFI).
The project traces back to around 2018/2019, when Chris first came across a video of bangka races while digging through Facebook, running parallel to his Budots research and broader interest in Philippine subculture and contemporary symbolism. The image stuck; boats supercharged and racing into the horizon, enough that he commissioned artist RV Sanchez for a video edit, and the fascination held for years after. A first attempt to turn it into a collection in 2022 was shelved; this year, it finally became a reference zine.
