This Shiraz has the palate that shows bright fruit (cherry, raspberry and mulberry), a hint of dark chocolate and plenty of structure, with grippy tannins that build through to the finish.

Also, according to James Halliday, it has established a consistent reputation as one of Australia’s best cool climate shirazs, low yields (especially in 2014) and site selection all-important. Handpicked, partial whole bunch and remainder whole berry open-fermented, matured in French oak (33% new) for 14 months. A super-fragrant red cherry bouquet, with notes of mulberry, licorice and plum joining the vibrant red fruits of the palate, backed by firm, precisely framed tannins.

This is delightful. It opens with an expectation: game meat, white pepper, raspberry, tart cherry, some dried herbs and a whiff of truffle. Savouriness and pretty fruit hand in hand. It delivers on the palate, satiny tannins wrap up more of those fruit and savoury elements, game meat and pepper a strong card but beautifully woven through red fruits and sweeter spices. Ribbons of those tannins trail long through the palate; a light dusting of spice lingers. It's spot-on medium weight, too. So much charm.
