Outbreaks of disease and famine are nothing new, nor is the responsibility of Christian leaders to respond to such societal devastation. Disease, Scarcity, and Famine assembles sermons from Ludwig Lavater, a leading pastor in Zurich during the sixteenth century, that deal with this subject matter. Lavater explains where plagues ultimately come from, gives reasons God chastises the good as well as the bad with them, and instructs readers on how they should conduct themselves during such outbreaks. He also recounts the divine promises in which God offers help to His elect during trying times. Lavater provides a response to disease both grounded in Scripture and satisfying to the soul.

______________

Ludwig Lavater (1527–1586) was a Swiss Reformed theologian working in the circle of his father-in-law, Heinrich Bullinger. He served as Archdeacon at the Grossmünster in Zurich and briefly Antistes of the Zurich church as the successor of Rudolf Gwalther. Lavater was a prolific author, composing homilies, commentaries, a survey of the liturgical practices of the Zurich church, and a biography of Bullinger. His work on ghosts (De Spectris ...) was one of the most frequently printed demonological works of the early modern period.

______________

“Writing from a time well versed in the unpredictability of infectious diseases and the pervasiveness of poverty, Lavater’s sermons on pestilence, scarcity, and famine offer today’s reader valuable insights into God’s purpose for communal suffering and of the spiritual responsibilities and mutual duties incumbent on society. While mindful of practical concerns, Lavater conveys, from his sixteenth-century vantage, a particular emphasis on the ‘why’ of widespread physical and economic hardship, providing a needed complement to the twenty-first century’s common preoccupation with the ‘how.’ Through Michael Hunter’s very readable translation, Lavater reminds us theologically and historically that in calamity the godly are neither abandoned nor alone.” John Bower, associate professor, pediatric infectious diseases, Northeast Ohio Medical University; and adjunct professor, church history, Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary

The best devotional ever!
Format: Paperback
I have read many devotionals through the years in conjunction with the Bible. This one is the best of all of them. I first heard of Lilias Trotter when I bought my granddaughter the children's book about her: Lily: The Girl Who Could See by Sally Oxley, Tim Ladwig with Miriam Huffman Rockness. While waiting for it to arrive, I watched the movie/documentary about Lilias Trotter's life Many Beautiful Things(2015)(You can view it free on YouTube). Miriam Huffman Rockness is integral to the film and all the research on the late artist and missionary's life. The Lord spoke an urgency and determination to Miriam's heart in preserving the legacy of Lilias Trotter. Without Mrs. Rockness, I believe Lilias Trotter's art, journals, and mission work would have lingered and disappeared into relative obscurity. God made Lilias Trotter special and she lived her life for His glory and service. After watching the film, I downloaded Lilias Trotter's Parables of the Cross on Kindle. I loved it, but the kindle version didn't contain the artwork she'd completed to go with this book. Her art and her words go hand-in-hand. It left me wanting something with both. I decided to order this devotional. This is a triple blessing! It has excerpts from Lilias' journals and writings plus her artwork at the start of each devotional plus a daily devotional inspired by these. Miriam Huffman Rockness brings application to today and ties it to her own life of service. I know Lilias and Miriam will have great talks in eternity. Thank goodness we still have Miriam. I will be reading more of the books the Lilias Trotter Legacy group makes available.

Only Excerpts and Art in Book From Lilias Trotter
Format: Paperback
Lilias Trotter is one of my favorite authors. It is my own fault that I didn't read the title careful enough to realize that it's the authors own personal thoughts about things Lilias said or painted that is the main content of the book. She's a good writer and I appreciate her personal reflections, but it's not what I assumed. The printing is well done and it's always a gift to see Lilias artwork

Beautiful gift book.
Format: Paperback
The quotes stimulate me to journal my own thoughts. I bought one for myself and one for a friend. It would make a nice pairing with her biography, “Until the Day Breaks”.

Beautiful!
Format: Paperback
I have just discovered Lilias Trotter and her writings and paintings. Beautiful watercolors evoking all aspects of her life especially spent in Africa are on each page with a snippet of a quote from her writings. Even without journaling, it's pleasure to page through admiring her wonderful talent and Godly perspective.

Beautiful Journal Type of book
Format: Paperback
As my friend said when she opened it...it's so beautiful, I don't want to write in it! Just a paperback type of journal, but for Lilias Trotter admirers, it's a treasure.
