The Book Of Disquiet: The Complete Edition

The definitive edition of the much-loved classic

The Book of Disquiet is one of the great literary works of the twentieth century. Written over the course of Fernando Pessoa's life, it was first published in 1982, pieced together from the thousands of individual manuscript pages left behind by Pessoa after his death in 1935. Now this fragmentary modernist masterpiece appears in a major new edition that unites Margaret Jull Costa's celebrated translation with the most complete version of the text ever produced. It is presented here, for the first time in English, by order of original composition, and accompanied by facsimiles of the original manuscript.Narrated principally by an assistant bookkeeper named Bernardo Soares - an alias of sorts for Pessoa himself - The Book of Disquiet is 'the autobiobraphy of someone who never existed', a mosaic of dreams, of hope and despair; a hymn to the streets and cafés of 1930s Lisbon, and an extraordinary record of the inner life of one of the century's most important writers. This new edition represents the most complete vision of Pessoa's genius.

'In a time which celebrates fame, success, stupidity, convenience and noise, here is the perfect antidote' - Daily Telegraph

'A complete masterpiece, the sort of book one makes friends with and cannot bear to be parted with' - Independent

'It's hard to explain how this modernist hymnal of boredom, fatigue, dejection and jadedness is so beautiful and life affirming' - New Statesman Books of the Year

'To read and then contemplate him is to be lifted a little bit above the earth in a floating bubble. One becomes both of the world and not of it. There's no one like him, apart from all of us.' - Guardian

'An odd, occasionally exasperating and sometimes beautiful book and one that will be your friend at 3am on a sleepless night.' - Observer

'Fernando Pessoa was simply one of the best 20th-century writers ever... captivating... a series of beautifully wistful reminiscences, diary entries and aphoristic snippets... we recommend it like crazy. Pick one up and open it anywhere and we promise you'll be richly rewarded.' - Dazed and Confused

'Gorgeous ... utterly original' - The New York Times

'A reading experience unlike any other ... you will never forget it, or stop waiting to return to it' - New Statesman

Size up
Size: 2 Big Kid, Color: Black/Pink
My daughter loves them. However they run a size small so we had to size up. She is anywhere from a 13-1 and we had to get a 2 in these. Overall great show and quality. She also just learned how to tie her shoe (7yo) and they are easy for her to tie. Style is great for running and sports too. Overall great value for the money.

These shoes make a great first impression, but beware of the stingy toe box.
Size: 13.5 Wide Big Kid, Color: Black/Orange
These shoes make a good first impression. They look sharp and appear to be well-made for running shoes. They also get bonus points for having actual laces instead of the common velco/fake laces combo. However, my son struggled to get them on at first due to limited room in the toe box. He has wide feet as well as high arches and the shoes were very snug across the top of his foot initially. Once he got them on, we determined that they were both wide enough (which is a rarity in itself) and the right size – just tight across the top. I actually had to remove the insoles to get them on his feet at first. After a few minutes I tried again with the insoles and he wore them around the house for a few hours, at which point the upper material had relaxed and/or the footbed had started to take on the shape of his foot, in effect creating more wiggle room. By then he didn't want to take them off, so they must have gotten more comfortable after that brief break-in period. If they were still too tight I'm sure he would have complained. I'll update the review if the shoes wear out prematurely or there is anything else noteworthy to report.
