The Language Of War

A TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR

When everyday life becomes a state of emergency, how can yesterday’s words suffice?

‘We were so happy and didn’t know it…’

A thirty-three-year-old writer lives in a quiet European suburb with his wife and his dog. His parents have bought an apartment nearby. On weekends they go out for brunch, cook and see friends. Life is good; it is normal. Then the invaders come.

The Language of War is about what happens when your world changes overnight. When you wake up to the sound of helicopters and the smell of gunpowder. When your home is hit by shells or broken into by gunmen, and you spend another night in a basement-turned-bomb shelter. When, even though you’ve never held a weapon before, you realise the only choice is to fight back. It is about things one can never forget, or forgive.

Bringing together Oleksandr Mykhed’s vivid day-by-day chronicles of the invasion of Ukraine with a chorus of other voices – his family, friends in exile, those who have fought and have witnessed unimaginable atrocities – this book is both a record, and a reckoning. Haunting and timeless, it asks how it is possible to find the words to describe a new reality; how you can still make sense of the world when the only language you can speak is the language of war.

'A stunning account of life in a time of war. If this doesn’t make you look up from your screen to reflect on Ukraine, then nothing will… often heart-rending… this is far more than history, invaluable as his detailed reporting is. As well as a reckoning with Russia, it is also a reflection on humanity in any war' - Financial Times

'What role for the artist in times of catastrophe? An important book and a painful piece of history… brilliant' - Observer

'A vivid account of invasion and the struggle to find the words to describe a new reality: war' - Financial Times

'A harrowing recount of life as a Ukrainian during the first months of Russia’s invasion – a timely reminder of its ever-presence for the millions living through it. It is, in that sense, a book not about Ukraine but about Ukrainians. . . it will compel you to care' - Independent

'In The Language of War, the author himself is the eyewitness… the book brims with horrorMykhed wields a skilful, angry pen' - Economist

'A detailed, on-the-ground account, reminding us of the atrocities that are changing life in Ukraine forever… The Language of War eats into the mind like phosphorus' - Spectator

'Mykhed focusses on how culture and, in particular, language have become important theatres of war… a clever, passionate book' - The Times

'Before 24 February 2022, writer Oleksandr Mykhed and his wife, Olena, had an enviable life. In 2018 they’d bought a three-storey townhouse in Hostomel, a suburb of Kyiv. On Saturdays, they’d go out for brunch and walk their dog in the forest... Then came 24 February... Within less than a week, life had completely transformed... The Language of War is a book written in the moment, charting the first year of Russia's invasion... scattering fragments of his exploded past through the brutal reality of a grindingly violent present' - Observer

Insanely great jeans for the price!
Special Size: Wide Leg Crop, Size: 12, Color: Medium Blue Vintage
I’m obsessed with these jeans. They’re comfortable and I think they legitimately look great. I had a baby 6 months ago and my body is “in transition” so I didn’t want to buy anything too expensive. These are cute, fit well, good quality. Excellent for short girls - I’m 5’ tall and they’re exactly the right length for a full-length jean. I feel like they’re fashionable without being too trendy (they work for 30somethings as well as 20somethings). They’re nice thick cotton with very little stretch. Because of that I’d be conservative with sizing because they do stretch significantly when you wear them. I got these in the lighter blue, too. The darker wash is slightly smaller and I wound up liking the color better, too. But the light wash is nice.

Excellant value
Special Size: Wide Leg Crop, Size: 14, Color: Rinse, Special Size: Wide Leg Crop, Size: 14, Color: Rinse
Purchased the “cropped” length. I am 5ft 3.5 inch. Weight 170lbs (42 inch hip/38 inch waist) normally wear a size 10/12 or 31 in jeans, depending on the brand. I ordered up at 14 for these based on other reviewers. (When held up to other jeans they were the same as a Talbots 10 at the waist) Prewash they felt good, a little big& length hit at the top of my foot. After wash and dry, the fit was almost perfect and the length was at lower ankle. Ordering up is probably the right choice, although I think I could have been comfortable in a 12 (with no drying). They are a tad bit too long for a “cropped” look IMO. The wide leg is a true wide leg and falls straight from the waist. The material is heavy and there is almost no give/stretch - so a traditional denim. This is the dark blue and it is a true dark blue. You can’t beat the price, excellent value.

Be careful when washing!!!
Special Size: Wide Leg Crop, Size: 12, Color: Iced Blue Light Wash
Loved the jeans but after I washed them only after wearing one time, the color got completely stained. I washed on gentle with like colors and somehow the entire jeans turned splotchy. So upsetting because the fit and feel were great.

Great Jeans!!
Special Size: Wide Leg, Size: 8, Color: Stone Dark Wash
I love these wide leg jeans! The denim is thicker and more durable than I was expecting, especially for the price. These are a great quality! I get compliments on them every time I wear them and people are surprised when I tell them they're Amazon Basic brand. They fit true to size as I followed the size guide. From now on my jeans will be this brand!

Surprising good - great quality for price.
These are great for the price. They run a little wide in the waist so I sized down from an 8 to a 6 and they fit perfect. They are a true wide leg - so don’t buy if you are looking for something more straight leg or flair. The quality of the denim is very nice. I’m actually surprised and the quality. These do not feel stretchy which is good for the style. Very happy. Hopefully they hold up after washing
