You can tell by the wear to the eagle, wreath and motto that this buckle spent a lot of time in action. Even the pebbled field shows wear to the sides of the buckles. There is some slight finish remaining in the lowest details of the pebbling, giving this an interesting look. This aluminum buckle has lost quite a few details to the feathers of the eagle, and the top of the motto and wreath. It is buffed smooth. There is some finish remaining in the lowest details of the central motif, but not much is left. More of the combat green original finish is in place on the reverse of the buckle. The reverse of the buckle is maker marked just under the integral catch, but it’s hard to make this out. It could be R S & S for Richard Sieper & Söhne, but again, it’s hard to read the first part. The aluminum rollbar and prongs work as they should. This is a classic wartime example of a buckle that looks like it spent the whole of the war attached to a German soldier. This buckle is in sound shape, it just shows wear.
