Knitters, spinners and weavers have never before been so interested in sheep breeds. At yarn shows around the world they can be found seeking out skeins of yarn from their favourite sheep breeds. Provenance is increasingly important to yarn lovers alongside sourcing yarn from farmers using regenerative methods.
The UK has more ancient breeds than any other country and the rich diversity of breeds and the unique characteristics of British wool are valued worldwide. This is a guide to the pure breeds of sheep found in the UK, exploring their history, habitat, appearance and, of course, their fleece and the resulting yarn.
Historically, British sheep originated from three main sources: longwools and a few shortwools from the Romans; ancients from the island of Soay in Scotland; and mountain breeds from the Vikings. Today, sheep breeds used for knitting are categorised slightly differently: there are the primitives, longwools, and downs and shortwools.
Knitwear designer and author, Justine Lee, set out on a search for the British ‘cashmere’ and knitted with yarn from each of the 62 pure breeds in order to find the ones that produce the best yarn for hand knitting. She has designed 10 knitting patterns for garments and accessories made using yarn from 10 different pure breed sheep, focusing on the ones that provide the softest and most beautiful wool for hand knitted projects.
The UK has a long history of sheep farming and has contributed significantly to the development and preservation of many sheep breeds. Although the sheep are native British breeds all of the sheep featured in this collection can be found in the USA and Australia which also have a strong tradition of sheep farming and conservation.
Beautiful black and white photography captures the unique look and characteristics of these wonderful animals that mean so much to fibre lovers around the world.

Buy if you like shredded meat I guess

I was so excited to try these “slices” of beef because I grew up eating deer biltong made from deers my uncles would go hunt. Some of the best snacks I ever had, absolutely delicious. So when I decided to see if any biltong was actually sold around here I was surprised and pleased this was available. Unlike beef jerky which uses lots of sugar for some reason I was hoping this would have more meaty flavor but it doesn’t really. Although that might be due to the fact that I did get “slices” of meat, no what I got was basically shredded and powdered. It’s salty, but has absolutely no spice whatsoever and is just not good at all.

Very greasy biltong and not spicy at all

The flavor is ok but the spice is almost nonexistent. It’s super greasy/oily, with big pieces of fat, so if you’re expecting a nice lean, dry, and spicy biltong, this is not the right one to try. I took the photo to try and capture the shiny, wet, translucent appearance of this biltong but it’s hard to see. Maybe it’s just personal preference but I’m used to biltong being dry and opaque with nearly zero fat chunks and not leaving a film of oil on my hands after eating it.

Most like South African Biltong
Flavor Name: Spicy, Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Firstly, this is NOT JERKY!! So please stop comparing it to that disgusting, over-processed, artificially flavored stuff. Nothing can compare to good biltong. It is seasoned and air dried meat that is the most amazing high protein snack available. Jerky doesn't deserve to be in the same room as biltong, let alone compared to it.
I am a South African recently relocated to the USA and have been trying various Biltong brands available. This is by far the best. I prefer the spicy to the original, but that it a personal preference, the original is also very good, but could do with a bit more flavor. The dry wors is also good, but I am a big biltong eater and always have been. For those of you who don't know, dry wors is a thin sausage (sausage = wors), that has been air dried. It is not a brat type sausage that most Americans are familiar with, it is more a kielbasa or Argentinian style sausage (but not quite).
Thank you, being able to have this, has prevented me from going crazy some days. Now I just need to try your boerewors!

LOVE THEM!!

LOVE! These socks are so comfortable! I wear a 5 in women's and a 3 in big kid shoes. The small fit me perfectly. I see where some say they run small but I can't say that was an issue for me. They are "snug" but thats what you want with a no show sock. I feel they have support vs the ones i used to buy at Walmart. They are very soft! I am actually buying more today and throwing my other ones in the trash!

So will not write down your foot

I love these socks. They have a little bit of gel on the top of the heel for support in your tennis shoes and so your socks don’t write down. Very good quality.
