What it's used for

  • Fitted horizontally at the base of close-board or panel fencing to protect the lower edge from soil contact and standing water
  • Used as a kickboard beneath feather edge boarding to keep the bottom course clear of the ground
  • Agricultural and field boundary fencing where a low-level barrier is needed between posts
  • General outdoor construction and garden projects requiring a wide, treated flat board

Fitting and handling

Allow boards to acclimatise outside, under cover, for 48 hours before fitting where possible, particularly in wet weather. Fix to fence posts using galvanised or stainless steel screws or nails to avoid corrosive reactions with the treatment chemical. The rough sawn surface accepts fence paint, creosote substitute, and oil-based preservatives well, and re-coating the cut ends after trimming on site will help maximise service life.

FAQ

What is a gravel board used for in fencing?

A gravel board sits horizontally at the base of a fence between posts, keeping the main fence panels or feather edge boards clear of the soil. This prevents the timber from sitting in standing water and significantly extends the life of the fence above it.

Is this gravel board suitable for direct ground contact?

Yes. This board is pressure treated to Use Class 4 (UC4), which means it is rated for direct ground contact and in-ground use in exterior applications. It is the correct treatment level for a board that will sit at or near soil level.

What does 22mm x 200mm (8x1) mean for a gravel board?

These are the nominal sawn dimensions: 22mm thick and 200mm wide. The 8x1 label is the traditional imperial equivalent (8 inches by 1 inch). Because the board is rough sawn rather than planed, the finished size will be close to but not exactly the nominal dimension.

Nottage Timber Merchants stock a full range of fencing timber including feather edge boards to pair with these gravel boards. We supply trade and retail customers across South Wales, with timber available for collection from our Bridgend yard or delivery to the local area.

Works great on many different size cans
Works great on various size cans. It is a little larger that other openers, but seems very sturdy. It is a little loud and slow, but not a large concern. Very happy with it.

Stopped working after 3 months
It stopped working after 3 months. The motor still runs the gear still turns. But it does not engage the can to cut. I bought it for a post operative situation and I am glad that it worked when for the length of time it did but it's disappointing that I now have to throw this item away.

Meh.
Worked great the first couple of times it was used. But then it stopped cutting into the cans and does not open them. It causes the metal to fray off in small pieces which resulted in getting a piece of metal stuck in my finger for weeks so I don't recommend. It's also very loud.

not better than manual……!!!!!
Do Not Buy This Product. this review is coming at 1 April 2026. This can opener was purchased in October 2025. My initial review was that it worked well and did the job. It was meant to do however, after a few uses, I noticed that the can opener continue to move around and around the can even after the can lid had been cut open. in January 2026 it began to make more and more rotations around the can and the lid was not cut loose. After a few more uses. It just rotated and did nothing else. I sent an email to the company. I contacted Amazon about it. I’ve done everything that I can possibly see to do but I get no positive results. Consequently, I have a six month old can opener. It does not work. worked well for the first 10 or 20 uses; then the cutting edge just wore out (3-4mos.), so now my money was wasted. No explanation no offer, too bad.

Don't waste money on this one
Ordered in January 2026. Worked good the first few times. Now it just rotates around and around the can but doesn't cut anything. I'm so disappointed because it failed shortly after my return window closed.
