Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Montmorency County, Michigan, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries.

Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds.

The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s.

What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . .
3343 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map)
11 Cemeteries
Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc.

What Cities and Towns are in Montmorency County, Michigan (and in this book)?
Atlanta, Avery, Bigelow, Birchwood Beach, Canada Creek Ranch, Donnelly, Garland Village, Hetherton, Hillman, Lewiston, Royston, Rust, Vienna Junction

Indexes in this book
-Surnames in the County * number of times each Surname occurs
-Surname/Township Index * every Surname and the frequency in which each appears in relevant Township-level Maps
-Full-Name Index (of Original Landowners) for each Township
-Populated Places
-Cemeteries
-Multi-Patentees (Groups of people who acquired land together)

What is the relevant time-frame (years) for this book?

Whenever the land was first sold or transferred to the public by the United States government. But the truth is that most counties took decades to settle and it is not unusual to find counties where the first patent might date in the 1820s and the last one may be in the 1920s. The important thing to remember is that these are FIRST landowners---not for just a single date---but each parcel is labeled using the first landowner.

You can answer this question with total accuracy by searching the patents in the county you are interested in at the Bureau of Land Management General Land Office's website. This is, after all, our source for the patents that we map.

Good, but you sacrifice a few things in favor of style
Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 10, Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 10
It’s much better than other shoes out there, but the design is slightly confusing. The first thing you have to know is that the shoe won’t be mind blowingly soft, but it is around as comfortable as standing on something like vans shoes. The holes on top are both a plus and a minus, when you step in a puddle, your feet get instantly soaked, but just by walking around for a bit, they dry up again. Then these holes reduce the structural integrity of the shoe, so I expect the top to be the first part of the shoe that deteriorates, when usually for all my other shoes, it’s the sole that falls off first. With the holes, you can’t shine them the traditional way, you have to be more careful as you might get goo into the inside fiber. Finally you can’t run in these, they’re larger than your foot which is quite comfortable while just standing or walking, but I’m sure they’ll tear if you don’t watch your footing. If all that is okay with you, You’ll get quite a few compliments on it as you walk around, because these are beautiful and excellent as a dress shoe/loafer hybrid

Great gift for any guy!
Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 12
These are one of 2 pairs of work shoes my husband will wear, the other one is the same shoe in brown. He says they’re the comfiest pair of dress shoes he’s ever had and the quality and ease of cleaning is incredible. They’ve lasted him years now so I’d say they’re well worth the money.
