The David Oscarson Koi Fountain Pen - Teal distills tranquility and movement into a work of precision writing art. Translucent teal enamel evokes rippling water, while the Koi motif signals grace, resilience, and enduring good fortune. Conceived for collectors who value sculpture, color, and line in equal measure, it harmonizes traditional decorative arts with modern writing performance in a limited edition offering.

Craftsmanship & Design

Each piece begins with a finely engraved metal foundation, its guilloche pattern cut in crisp, repeating waves that animate the surface even before color is introduced. Layers of kiln-fired vitreous enamel are then applied in teal, allowing light to travel through the glassy surface and return with remarkable depth and clarity. The result is a shifting interplay of tone and reflection, as if the design were illuminated from within.

The Koi motif is articulated with clean, purposeful detailing that rewards close study: scales and fins emerge with sculptural definition, while the surrounding wavework amplifies the sense of motion. Precious metal appointments underscore the pen’s architectural lines, balancing ornament with restraint so the enamel’s luminosity remains the visual focal point. As with all David Oscarson creations, the finishing is exacting, edges are immaculate, and transitions between materials are seamless to the eye and hand.

Writing Experience

An 18k gold nib provides the pen’s voice: smooth, consistent, and quietly expressive. Available in fine, medium, or broad, it delivers a dependable flow that flatters everyday notes and formal correspondence alike. The cartridge/converter filling system offers practical flexibility for those who keep favorite bottled inks at hand, as well as those who prefer the convenience of cartridges. In the hand, the Koi presents a confident, composed balance; the section geometry and tactile precision of the finishing help stabilize the grip without distraction.

Artistry & Symbolism

Long associated with perseverance and transformation, koi add cultural resonance to the composition without overwhelming it. The teal palette suggests clear water and calm depth, inviting an unhurried pace at the page. This is a pen that reads beautifully from across a room and becomes more compelling at close range, where the layering of guilloche and enamel reveals its complexity. The harmony between motif, color, and material is deliberate and considered, lending the piece a timeless presence.

Brand Heritage

David Oscarson has earned an international following among collectors for reviving and advancing the dialogue between engine-turned guilloche and kiln-fired enamel in modern writing instruments. Produced in small, carefully controlled editions, the brand’s creations combine traditional decorative techniques with contemporary precision. The Koi collection exemplifies that ethos: an object meant not only to be admired, but to be used and handed down with its meaning intact.

Wonderful depiction of the city & finding gratitude
Format: Hardcover
I bought this book after moving my young family from SF to a very homogeneous suburb. Rode MUNI with my kids & at the time didn’t realize how diversity is taught passively when it’s all around you. Fast forward, my kiddo makes a comment in preschool that shocks me & realize that she’s now in such a bubble. This book is clearly nostalgic for me, but for my kids it’s a chance to talk about all the different lives people live. A chance to talk about race, culture, homelessness, privilege (riding the bus instead of a car, not having a music player), people with disabilities, etc. To those who choose to post about the grammar In this book, good authors work very hard on depicting dialects, which are 100% a part of one’s culture. Take the opportunity to discuss the diversity that exists in language too. My goodness, white people from Boston add & delete Rs like crazy (Cubar instead of Cuba, ca’ instead of car). 🙃

Great story and wonderful pictures
I’ve been trying to find books my son (6) would enjoy reading. He's asked me to read this one to him every night for like a week now. It’s a sweet story and the illustrations are beautiful. I’m really glad I bought it.

Award Winning Teaching Book
Format: Hardcover
This story has a lovely story that is a great teaching moment for young children. I enjoyed the illustrations and I find these stories about real life situations of other people in other circumstances other than your own offer great teaching moments for the young readers....Recommend you read it to your young children and it gives you a good opportunity to explain to your children that even those who have much less than you do....but, have love and family are wealthy in their own way....and to express all types of families exist and are all just as important and your individual family is to you. Important that they are getting more books out that offer important lessons about life to young people...to grow their empathy for others...and caring feelings for others from a young age. Recommend
