Built hundreds of years ago by Hawaiians and formerly more than 450 in number, loko i‘a are an advanced form of aquaculture that continues to feed, educate, inspire, and strengthen our communities. Young readers will learn about the different types of traditional loko i‘a, the growth cycles of their inhabitants, and the work of their caretakers.

The loko i‘a-themed set of six leveled readers and a Big Ideas Science Book is the second in a series of Hawaiian culture-based science readers called Pāhana ‘Āina Lupalupa (PAL). PAL integrates Hawaiian language, culture, and place-based content with literacy and science concepts that meet national standards. Developed in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i and translated into English, this exciting series was created through partnerships among a group of Hawai‘i educators, literacy specialists, and Hawaiian-language resource developers in consultation with scientists and cultural practitioners.

I’ve gone through a lot of wallets over the years (cheap ones, expensive ones, slim cardholders, you name it), and this Timberland bifold with the attached flip pocket is easily the best all-around wallet I’ve ever carried. The leather is excellent: full-grain, soft right out of the box, and it’s aged beautifully in just a few months with a rich patina that actually looks better with every scratch and scuff. Build quality is top-notch: tight, even stitching, no loose threads, and the edges are finished cleanly. Four months of daily front-pocket carry and it still looks practically new. Layout is perfect for me. Six card slots plus the two slip pockets behind them handle everything I need (10 cards + a few folded bills) without getting bulky. The attached flip ID window is a game-changer; I keep my driver’s license and work badge there and can show either in seconds without opening the wallet. Cash fits easily in the full-length bill compartment. It’s genuinely slim for a traditional leather bifold, sits comfortably in both front and back pockets, and never feels like a brick. The embossed Timberland logo is subtle and classy. At this point I can’t imagine switching to anything else. It’s durable, functional, looks sharp, and was a fraction of the price of some “luxury” wallets that didn’t last half as long. If you want a classic leather bifold that actually delivers, this is it. 100% recommended; already planning to buy another as a backup.
