'One of the best books I've read in my entire life. It's epic. It's transportive . . . It was unputdownable!'
Oprah Winfrey, OprahDaily.com

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water follows a family in southern India that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning - and in Kerala, water is everywhere.

At the turn of the century a twelve-year-old girl, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this poignant beginning, the young girl and future matriarch - known as Big Ammachi - will witness unthinkable changes at home and at large over the span of her extraordinary life, full of the joys and trials of love and the struggles of hardship.

A shimmering evocation of a lost India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the hardships undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. Imbued with humour, deep emotion and the essence of life, it is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.

'Splendid, enthralling...this is why literature, in all its comforting and challenging forms, matters' - Guardian

'Majestic...life-affirming, compassionate, and gripping from start to finish' - Mail on Sunday

'Grand, spectacular, sweeping and utterly absorbing' - New York Times Book Review

'An important book for its efforts in documenting times and places most readers would be too young to have witnessed. It is also a tribute to the scientific progress that has made human lives healthier, and the sacrifices made by previous generations.' - Observer

'Deliciously inventive.... Over the course of three generations, two seemingly disparate, deeply connected narratives unfold in an ode to India, family and medical marvels' - TIME magazine

'An immense, immersive work, brimming with interconnected storylines that meander and converge like great river tributaries . . . The novel encompasses intense passion and tragedy, as well as a medical mystery . . . An essential, even healing feat of imagination, a whole world to get lost in' - Los Angeles Times

'An epic melodrama of medicine' - Wall Street Journal

'Verghese's novel traces a family's evolution from 1900 through the 1970s, with intimacy swept up into widescreen pageantry in the manner of 'Dr. Zhivago.' This grandly ambitious, impassioned work is a magnificent feat.' - Washington Post

'Much will be written about Abraham Verghese's multigenerational South Indian novel in the coming months and years...Ever the skillful surgeon, Verghese threads meaningful connections between macrocosmic and microcosmic details so elegantly that they are often barely noticeable at first' - NPR.org

'Fourteen years in the making, Abraham Verghese's The Covenant of Water was worth the wait . . . A massive achievement. Rarely can such an intricate story, following a dozen major characters over more than 70 years, be described as flying by, but this one does' - St Louis Post-Dispatch

'What a joy...to experience the exquisite, uniquely literary delight of all the pieces falling into place in a way one really did not see coming...By God, he's done it again.' - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

'Verghese - who gifts the matriarch his mother's name and even some of her stories - illuminates colonial history, challenges castes and classism, and exposes injustices, all while spectacularly spinning what will undoubtedly be one of the most lauded, awarded, best-selling novels of the year.' - Booklist (starred review)

'Verghese outdoes himself with this grand and stunning tribute to 20th-century India' - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

'A literary landmark, a monumental treatment of family and country, as sprawling in scope as Edna Ferber's Giant . . . Writing with compassion and insight, Verghese creates distinct characters in Dickensian profusion, and his language is striking... Throughout, there are joy, courage and devotion, as well as tragedy' - Library Journal (starred review)

'A lush, literary masterpiece - written with a surgeon's skill and an artist's eye - that delivers a rich, emotional return on the reader's investment' - BookBrowse

A better topper from a company I trust
Color: Black, Size: Twin
I have a memory foam daybed that has seen better days. The top layer has started to shift from regular use, and I wanted something that would help hold it together. The Bedsure Twin Mattress Topper does exactly that and made a huge difference right away. This is a high quality, well constructed mattress pad. It fits securely over an extra thick mattress and stays in place. The corner bands under deep pockets are strong and keep everything aligned without slipping. The measurements are accurate. There are instructions to dry it, then leave it out to expand. There was no weird smell. What you see is exactly what you get, in a good way. The cushioning is even and comfortable, and the fabric feels thick and smooth. It adds structure while still improving comfort. It has a more premium look and function than expected, similar to what you would find in a Five-Star hotel. It feels expensive. I also appreciate that the color is not white. It looks cleaner over time and feels like a more practical choice. I have used several Bedsure products, and the quality has been consistent. I also like that it is a woman founded and owned brand, and they continue to improve their products.

adds a touch of comfort!
Color: Black, Size: Queen, Color: Black, Size: Queen
I ordered this mattress topper for our guest bedroom. It is soft and adds a little plushness to the existing mattress. I ordered the queen size for our queen size mattress. It fit well, without much overlap from the mattress topper. The topper has elastic corner bands as well as the fitted sheet like band around the edge, so the topper should stay in place. The color is black, as shown and if you use light colored sheets, it will likely show through. To combat this, I used a white mattress protector overtop of the pillow topper. You cannot see it through our protector and white sheets. The topper is more like a padded mattress protector than a true topper. It reminds me of a pillow top, it's not foam just filled to add softness to the mattress. I think it's a great addition, it adds a little height and comfort to the mattress. Overall, I think this is a nice upgrade to our guest room. It fits well, and serves its intended purpose. I would recommend to anyone wanting to improve the comfort of their mattress.

Try it but have lower expectations
Color: Black, Size: Queen
Pros: -fairly heavy -fits right -soft enough to dream on -not too expensive Cons: -kinda lumpy feeling and that’s hard to shake -not the classiest wrap/attachment -a little stinky out of the box that can take a while to offgas or whatever It definitely upgrades a futon mattress, even if it doesn’t want to bend easily with it. It’s meant for a stationary mattress.

Feels Like Sleeping on a Cloud
Color: Black, Size: Queen
This mattress topper completely transformed my bed. From the first night, I noticed how much softer and more comfortable my mattress felt. The pillow-top design adds a plush layer of cushioning without making the bed feel overly soft or unsupportive. I was especially impressed by how breathable it is. I tend to get warm while sleeping, but this topper stays comfortable throughout the night and doesn’t trap heat. The moisture-wicking fabric is a nice bonus and helps keep the bed feeling fresh. The deep-pocket design fit my mattress perfectly and stayed securely in place without shifting around. Installation was quick and easy, and the black color gives it a sleek, premium look. After fluffing up, it provided just the right amount of extra comfort and made my mattress feel much more luxurious. For the price, this topper offers excellent value and has greatly improved my sleep quality. I would definitely purchase it again and recommend it to anyone looking to add softness and comfort to their bed.

Feels Like Sleeping on a Cloud — One of My Favorite Bedsure Products Yet
Color: Black, Size: King
I’ve had really good experiences with Bedsure products over time, so whenever I get the chance to try another one I usually do, and this mattress topper definitely did not disappoint. This one went on my mom’s king size bed and the difference was noticeable immediately. The topper has a soft, cloud-like feel while still giving enough support underneath so you don’t just sink straight through it. It added a much more comfortable layer to the mattress and made the bed feel cozy and inviting without being overly heavy or hot. I also appreciated how easy it was to put on. The deep pocket design fit securely over the king mattress without struggling to stretch the corners, and once it was on, it stayed in place well through the night. The material feels breathable and smooth, which is especially nice for warmer nights. My mom commented that she slept really well with it and woke up feeling more comfortable than usual, which honestly says a lot. Overall this feels like a high-quality mattress topper that makes a bed instantly more comfortable. Bedsure continues to be one of those brands I trust for soft bedding and reliable quality.
