This standard-cover version saves you money; the CNC Billet Cover version adds a polished billet aluminum top plate that holds more constant pressure on the internals for play that stays gone longer. The Rebuild Process
Precision Machining: Input shaft, sector shaft, and worm gear are polished and lathe-machined to remove all pitting for a smooth, catch-free rotation.
Complete Hardware Refresh: All internal bearings and cups replaced with new, high-quality components.
Housing Restoration: Genuine German casting sand-blasted and refinished for a clean, professional appearance.
Leak Protection: New seals on both input and sector shafts, plus a new sector shaft bushing to prevent leaks and side-to-side play.
Professional Assembly: Hand-assembled and filled with 00 Grease (Corn Header Grease) — the gold standard for vintage steering boxes.
Final Calibration: Bench-tested and adjusted to factory spec for zero play on center.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between this and the $650 box? Only the top cover. This one uses the original-style cast cover; the billet version adds a CNC-machined billet aluminum top plate for extra rigidity. The internal rebuild is identical.
Is this a core exchange? Outright purchase — ships ready to install. Ask us about our Core Exchange Program if you'd like credit for your old box.
Will it fit my Super Beetle? No — Super Beetles use a different strut-type front end.
Can I install it myself? Yes, with basic VW front-end experience. Bolts in using factory hardware.
