Hedge Plants: Stock Friendly Hedge

These stock friendly hedge plants are strong 2 year old whips in a diverse native mix ideal for paddocks and garden hedges - and of course wildlife! We sell two different options detailed below, and can also quote for larger projects - get in touch

Option 1

The plants are a mix of mostly 60-90cm plants, which will most likely be from Kent or the Welsh borders. All the plants are British grown from UK origin seed, and come from growers who are members of the Plant Healthy scheme. Available in 500 plant packs, typically enough for 100m of hedge. Delivered by pallet.

Option 2

Our premium mix; larger 60-100cm plants, grown in Yorkshire by a Plant Healthy nursery. Available in smaller 50 plant packs.

Although there is no Blackthorn in the mix, avoiding potential damage to horse's eyes, it is good for laying and will make a dense thick hedge. Without Blackthorn - which suckers - this hedge is also ideal for gardens. Great for wildlife, and, for us, all year round interest too. Like all newly planted hedging however, it will need to be protected from animals for the first few years.

This diverse mix is 50% Hawthorn and 10% each of 5 species of native hedging plants depending on availability chosen from Crab apple, Dog rose or Scotch rose, Dogwood, Field maple, Guelder rose, Hazel, Wild cherry, Beech, Buckthorn, and Wild privet. We will include at least 6 minor species for multiple packs.

How To Plant

To make a stock proof hedge, whips are usually planted at 5 plants per metre in a staggered double row, or 7 plants in a triple row. Plant each species in a small group of 3-5 plants, and each row 50cm or so apart. Please look at our blog or video for help on establishment and maintenance. We offer a nationwide hedge planting service for larger projects; please get in touch for a quote.

Hedge Plant Delivery

Like all our bare root plants, our hedge plants are freshly lifted to order by the grower - they're not sitting around in a warehouse somewhere waiting for a robot to pack them up and speed them on their way! This means that ground conditions might mean a delay of up to a month before you have them delivered. They are bare root, so need to be dormant before delivery too - i.e. if it's too warm in early November delivery might be put back. Orders taken through the spring and summer - from the end of March - are delivered from November.

Stock friendly hedge suppliers: RV Roger, RJ Trees and Hedging, Oakover Nursery, British Hardwood Trees.

Our dogs hurt their mouths chewing these bones
Color: Purple & Blue
I don't do a lot of reviews because I realize many are objective opinions. However, in this case I felt it was necessary to warn others. Our dogs are aggressive chewers. Their last rubber bones (not these) which we've purchased before, and recently purchased again, were destroyed quickly. Chunks of rubber came off the ends. Since those didn't hold up like they used to, I found these harder bones hoping they would last longer. They were able to gnaw into the hard plastic within a few minutes. This created sharp edges that cut their mouths. When I saw a bit of blood on the bones, I took them away from the dogs and threw them away. I wondered why they quit chewing on them after being so excited at first. Also, these are hard enough to damage a tooth.

Pups have shown zero interest in these toys….
Color: Purple & Blue
I would agree that these are indestructible being neither of my dogs have shown any interest in these at all. At this rate they should last forever…

Durable but losses interest
Color: Purple & Blue
My dog is an aggressive chewer. She was interested in this toy while it was new, but soon after lost interest. Good news is although it took a beating it did not break or splinter. If soppy toys are disposable in your house, give it a try.
