ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A vibrant cultural history investigating pandemics and vaccines, by bestselling author and historian Simon Schama

Cities and countries engulfed by panic and death, desperate for vaccines but fearful of what inoculation may bring. This is what the world has just gone through with Covid-19. But as Simon Schama shows in his epic history of vulnerable humanity caught between the terror of contagion and the ingenuity of science, it has happened before.

Characteristically, Schama's message is delivered through gripping, page-turning stories set in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: smallpox strikes London; cholera hits Paris; plague comes to India. Threading through the scenes of terror, suffering and hope - in hospitals and prisons, palaces, and slums - are an unforgettable cast of characters: a philosopher-playwright burning up with smallpox in a country chateau; a vaccinating doctor paying house calls in Halifax; a woman doctor in south India driving her inoculator-carriage through the stricken streets as dead monkeys drop from the trees. But we are also in the labs when great, life-saving breakthroughs happen, in Paris, Hong Kong, and Mumbai.

At the heart of it all is an unsung hero: Waldemar Haffkine, a gun-toting Jewish student in Odesa turned microbiologist at the Pasteur Institute, hailed in England as "the saviour of mankind" for vaccinating millions against cholera and bubonic plague in British India while being cold-shouldered by the medical establishment of the Raj. Creator of the world's first mass production line of vaccines in Mumbai, he is tragically brought down in an act of shocking injustice.

Foreign Bodies crosses borders between east and west, Asia and Europe, the worlds of rich and poor, politics and science. Its thrilling story carries with it the credo of its author on the interconnectedness of humanity and nature, of the powerful and the people. Ultimately, Schama says, as we face the challenges of our times together, "there are no foreigners, only familiars."

Rugged Watch at Good Price
Color: Black, Gray
I originally wanted a G-Shock but I have a small wrist and G-Shocks come with cases that are too big for my 6.1 inch wrist. An alternative? I bought the Timex Ironman. It has a rugged look and many of the features of a G-Shock but at a lower price. Small wrist? Or don't want to spend the money for a G-Shock? This is your best bet.

Simple and reliable
Color: Black/Digital/Green
I love the simplicity and reliability of this watch. It has only a handful of features, but they're all easy to figure out and use. The display is quite readable as well, under just about any conditions. This is an example of good design that doesn't try to do too much. What it does do, it does well. Good price too! These watches are durable and will last a long time. Battery changes are easy too.

Beautifully simple
Color: Black/Digital/Green
My son has worn a smaller version of this watch for a few years. After trying a different brand lately, which broke way too easily, I found this one on Amazon listed as "Used - Very Good" condition. I received what appeared to be simply an open box item, otherwise it looked brand new. This watch fits me really well, and is not clumsy on my wrist, it does not get in the way of everyday motions. For me, it's just the right size. It is also pretty intuitive to use and set the alarms, etc. It has 3 alarms, each with a different sound. It can be worn in the shower without issue, I have not tried a swimming pool, though. It feels tough and durable, as my son's has proven to be. I'm very happy with this purchase. *** Update: I spent considerable time in swimming pools recently while wearing the watch. It's still as good as when I opened it. Still 5 stars. *** Update 2: a year-and-a-half of wearing, and it is performing really well! All the buttons and words on the watch are still in very good shape and easy to read. I wear this every single day. I don't put it through the wringer every day. But, I did spend a full week sailing and snorkeling last summer in salt water with hours each day in the water. It still looks and works the same as the day I bought it.
