For those of you that are not satisfied with the Dodge automatic transmission behind your Cummins engine, the Allison 6 speed swap is an excellent alternative. If you’re looking for increased reliability and a transmission that will hold under the power of the Cummins you will find that the Allison LCT 1000 built by ATS is superior to the factory transmissions offered by Dodge.

 

Due to the nature of the Ram Aisin AS69RC having very small shafts, gear sets and clutch packs, the factory Ram transmissions require very extensive modifications and expensive hard parts to compete with a rebuilt ATS Allison 1000. These parts include the hydraulic pump, clutch packs, shafts, and torque converter modifications to strengthen it to reliably handle the massive torque of the Cummins engine. The Allison 6 speed automatic transmission comes from the factory with large shafts, clutch packs and gear sets. This gives the Allison a direct advantage over the 69-RC Dodge transmissions. The 69-RC has similar size clutch packs, shafts and gear sets as the Allison, however, it does not have an ideal gear split so the 69-RC always seems a bit “clunky” and does not handle increased power levels well. The 69-RC transmission also relies on engine derate that happens between all gear shifts, this engine derate makes for a very poor shift quality and massive drivability complaints. When all costs are taken into consideration with regards to what it takes to upgrade all of the small and under designed parts of the Dodge transmission, the upgrade to the Allison conversion could be argued as the most cost effective solution.

 

There are a few questions you should ask yourself when weighing the decision of whether to go with an ATS upgraded Dodge transmission or to replace it with an Allison conversion:

 

Is your Cummins engine modified?

 

Do you tow heavy loads for long distances?

 

Do you have over-sized tires?

 

Does your vehicle appear to be under stress with the workload you are putting it under?

 

If you answered yes to any of these questions you are a prime candidate for the Allison transmission swap.

 

Upgrading to the Allison is the only logical choice. The Aisin 69-RC transmission suffers from many of the same shortcomings as the 68-RFE but also has its own unique issues. Currently there are limited hard part upgrades for the Aisin 69-RC and there are many areas that need to be addressed, not only for strength but for longevity. Factory replacement parts are 2 to 3 times the cost of conventional parts which drives the cost of rebuilding the 69-RC to a level that is unreasonable. For these reasons, ATS decided to focus our efforts on making the Allison 6 speed conversion affordable for anyone that needs to replace their failed 69-RC.

 

In order to properly transplant the Allison transmission into the Dodge Pickup there are many areas that need to be addressed. How the transmission is adapted to the engine, transfer case, cooler line adaptation, manual linkage, fill tube, transmission electronic control system, and driveline modifications are the basics. This is another area where ATS shines, we have taken the time to cast a “Factory fit” bell housing and extension housing to replace the GM ones found on the Allison. The new ATS castings allow the Allison to transmission to bolt directly up to the Cummins engine with out any engine modifications. Yes, this means you no longer need a different engine adapter plate, different starter, flex plate and most importantly you no longer have to grind material off of the engine block to make clearance for the starter. All of the factory wiring and fuel line brackets bolt to the original bell housing bolts as it came from the factory. The transfer case bolts up the back of the transmission and it’s positioned perfectly allowing the drive lines to line up properly.

The other area where the ATS Allison conversion shines is in ATS's electronics package. The Translator module bridges the gap between the Transmission Control Module (TCM), Body Control Module (BCM) and the Engine Control Module (ECM). When the factory Chrysler transmission is removed from the truck the BCM and ECM no longer receive information from the TCM, this causes a huge problem with the operation of the truck. A few of these issues are: loss of cruise control, loss of factory remote start, loss of factory rear view camera, speedometer out of calibration, you can not shift to 4x4 Low range, Loss of Tow Haul mode, Loss of Tap Shafter, Loss of PRND 1,2,3,4,5,6 indicator on dash. The ATS Translator module bridges all of this information making EVERYTHING work as it did from the factory. All functionality works perfectly allowing the truck to drive and operate as it did the day it rolled off the showroom floor!

And somehow, my subconscious remembers the button presses. Wild. This thing is light as a feather, and I got the inverse LCD for fun, which is cool as all get out, but takes some getting used to. The Indiglo sure looks awesome, though, and she's like Knight Rider down there. Stealth. The display is big, and easy even for my old eyes, the band is supremely comfortable, and there's a strap catch that actually works correctly! With no Bluetooth, battery life should be outstanding - always used to be. Back when watch batteries were like $12 each. There goes my allowance! Lol. I'm very impressed by this timepiece. I really didn't mean to order order it, but, oh well. I love it as much as my Casio. Affordable tough watches rock!

This Timex Ironman lives up to its name

Timex Ironman watches have been with me for a decade. This particular one I just ordered as a backup for the same one that I have had for seven years (and still works perfectly). I don't know why I ordered a backup except that I love it so much that I couldn't fathom the idea that Timex might discontinue this model. Why do I love it so much? Because it is functional in many ways. Aside from its durability, reliability and the fact that it fits on my wrist so comfortably, it is easy to read and extremely useful for tasks that need countdown alarms as well as regular timers (it has three which you can set). Since I gave up "fashionable" watches years ago in favor of practical, easy to read, multifunctional devises I found this Timex the best of all the other brands that I have tried in this category. Years ago, President Bill Clinton, who jogged regularly, was heavily chastised for wearing a very functional Timex Ironman watch in the Oval Office instead of what the professional politicians considered appropriate for a President. It was then that I realized how important it was for a person to wear a watch that they loved, and that was functional for them. At that point in time I had many other watches that I didn't jettison until later when I realized that I need only wear the watch that I loved and was useful to me. I still have another watch that I saved for "appropriate" times out but have only worn it once. The rest of the time my Timex Ironman stays on my wrist wherever I go.

A very comfy, pleasant casual sports watch- especially good for training

The Ironman series of watches has been around for about 40 years now, and with good reason. The current iteration doesn't disappoint. It's light weight, easy-to-read, has a good backlight, offers simple operation, great buttons, a decently loud chime, and is a feature rich watch. I purchased this one on a lark; it was sold as "used- very good" from an Amazon warehouse for $20. The Timex packaging/ box was damaged, but the watch itself was new, wrapped and seemed unused. Since I do not wear an item's packaging, I always look for such items when shopping on Amazon, as it can save quite a bit. In this case it was $12 less expensive, or about 1/3 less costly. I have owned a digital watch for over 40 years; from left to right in the photo- my 1980 Seiko (owned since new), my daily Casio, which has solar and atomic clock radio signal time setting, and the Ironman for you to compare size. Owning a number of Casio digital watches, I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort and ease of use of this Timex Ironman. The Ironman does feel somewhat more "plasticky" that some Casio watches I have, which may influence some buyers. But once you get past that feel, if you like the look of the watch, it's a great offering, especially at a $20 price point. The on the Ironman, a chronograph, a countdown timer, a second time zone, three alarms, 30 lap records, occasion reminders , and a perpetual calendar make it comparable, or better than many of the similarly priced Casio offerings. The Ironman does not feel quite as substantial as some of the lower cost G-Shock offerings I have tried, but is at least as comfy on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. Water resistance seems fine at 100 meters, and the recessed plastic crystal should avoid most scratches. The features should be very useful for those who do not want to wear a smartwatch for training. I hope this review has been helpful.

Almost the perfect watch

I have owned three earlier models of these things going back to the days when I actually ran road races. They are brilliant pieces of work. My only complaint of them was that the start/stop/split button(s)--there were two on the older models--were too small. Well, apparently Timex listens and the two small buttons are now combined into one larger one. Probably this was done years ago but I'm only now getting back into road work, so now I get to discover it. The perfect watch? Almost. I especially like this model as my eyes are not what they used to be and the oversized face makes it easier to read. The downside to this is that it also makes the crystal easier to scratch. That's always been an issue, but I can live with it. No, the real problem with this product is, was, and apparently ever shall be, the band. Now, it could be worse, it could be a resin band (like the old ones) that will crack and break within a couple of years, but no, this is a nylon and velcro wrap style which should be just dandy, but for three glitches: 1. it's too short 2. it's too narrow (gee whiz, Timex designers, it's an oversized watch, why not a matching oversized band?) and 3. it's still resin where it attaches to the actual watch. Now, I imagine it's probably less prone to breakage in how it's implemented, but if you should choose to replace it, I can see no obvious way of removing it short of cutting it off. Really? But these are minor complaints. I doubt it would be comfortable on anyone whose wrists are much bigger than my own, but replacement bands are everywhere, and this watch will keep time with style and it's brilliant at splits. Heck, it even functions admirably as a backup for my expensive stopwatches at our regular short track stock car events. For my money (and did I mention the price is wonderful?) the Ironman is still the best at what it does, and for what it can do.
