Homage to Matisse, L'Escargot Original Oil Painting

A joyful celebration of colour, texture and artistic heritage, Homage to Matisse – L'Escargot was painted just after I completed the full body of artwork for my first picture book.

At that time, I found myself deeply inspired by Henri Matisse and his iconic masterpiece The Snail (L’Escargot), created in 1953 — one of his final and most celebrated cut-out works. This monumental collage, measuring over nine feet square, is held in London’s Tate Modern and remains one of the most recognizable examples of Matisse’s revolutionary use of colour and shape.

Matisse’s original artwork is composed of bold, brightly coloured abstract forms arranged in a spiraling rhythm, inspired by the shell of a snail. In my own interpretation, I have re imagined these famous shapes by infusing them with my signature snails, playful movement and layered surface texture.

This painting dances with vibrant colour, tactile detail and energy, inviting the eye to travel around the canvas just as Matisse intended in his own chromatic composition. 

Adding another meaningful layer, a representation of Matisse’s original L’Escargot also appears within my new picture book, The Snail Artist, featured on the story’s gallery page to introduce young readers to the wonder of great artists and the importance of art history through storytelling.

Homage to Matisse – L'Escargot is therefore more than a painting; it is a collector’s piece that connects fine art, illustration, children’s literature and creative education.
