Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris)

The wild Crab Apple, Malus sylvestris, is a small tree of woods and hedges throughout Britain. It occurs singly, curiously, and is found naturally across Europe in scrub or on woodland edge, where it can find the light without too much competition. The native crab is relatively scarce; mostly you will now find cultivated varieties of crab apples (many of which we sell) or "wilding" trees, growing from discarded apple cores. Malus sylvestris was widely planted as a hedge plant in the enclosure periods, but these trees have long since died - they only last up to 100 years. Where you do now see them in hedges they're usually standard trees. They could be planted a lot more as hedge plants; they're hardy, attractive and stockproof. Crab apples need fertile soil and sun as they can be prone to pests and diseases.

Value For Wildlife

The crab's extended flowering period, with its very pretty blossom, is helpful for bees in particular. Over the winter many birds and mammals eat its apples. Malus sylvestris leaves and fruit are eaten by a wide range of animals, including a terrifying sounding moth, the apple leaf skeletoniser.

Uses

Crab apples are used in orchards to cross pollinate other apple trees. Their fruit, with its high pectin levels, makes delicious jelly, and the wood has an attractive pinkish hue when carved. Good firewood too, which used to be burned by the Celts during fertility festivals.

Plants For Sale

Like all our native trees and hedging, our crab apple plants have UK provenance and origin - that's to say they're British grown using seed from trees here. We're selling 2 year old 60-90cm bare root plants, ideal for hedging or mixed woodland planting schemes.

Suppliers: RJ Trees and Hedging, RV Roger, Oakover Nurseries, Cheviot Trees. All these growers are Plant Healthy certified.

See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting Crab Apples.

Most of our Crab Apple trees are bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March. During the lifting season there may be up to two weeks delay between placing the order and dispatching (longer for standards), due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders placed for Crab Apple trees between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.

In addition to bare root plants, we also offer Malus sylvestris as small cell grown plants. These have some soil around their roots and are a sort of half way house between bare root and pot grown. Their root systems are pretty small but they will establish well.

Have a look at our videos on what to do when your plants arrive and how to plant a bare root tree. Please ask about larger trees; we can often supply them but will need to quote on an individual basis as carriage varies so much.

I bought this because my dogs do not want “gentle play.” They want something they can really grab, shake, and try to win. This has been a great tug toy for that. The material feels thick, the stitching has held up, and it has enough grip that I can keep control without it slipping. It is also easy to rinse off after backyard dirt and dog drool. This is the kind of toy that actually gets used instead of ending up ignored in the corner.

My Scottie loves it!
This item arrived in a sealed plastic bag to protect it during shipping. My Scottish Terrier LOVES this toy! She's the queen of tug-o-war, and the more she can fling a toy around, the better, which makes this one a winner in her mind. It's very comfy for us to hold onto while she tries her best to yank our arm off with it, since she can really get a good grip on her side. My Westie wasn't impressed, but she's not really a "toy" dog, to begin with. So far, it has withstood the might of the Scottish Terrier alligator jaws, despite her trying her best to destroy it, so hopefully she'll be able to enjoy it for awhile. Great quality, great durability, made in the USA, and for a reasonable price, it's a winner in our house!

Our dogs love it. A great, indestructible, chewing experience.
Our dogs love playing with this wagalicious tuggfinity toy. In my pic you can see that they fell asleep playing with it. They chased each other around the house with it and played tug a war with it until they exhausted themselves so I’d say this is a huge hit with our fur baby’s. At 9”x7” it’s a perfect size for our big dogs. The material it’s made from (TPR) it super tough, durable and has a bit of flexibility to it and they can sink their teeth into it and tug a war with it without it getting chew marks or falling apart. It gives them something to chew in that’s not hard but is soft enough to give them great chew satisfaction. It’s a bit heavy which is good for my big dogs too because its weight keeps them active. Non toxic as well. I’d say this is a great value and because they love it so much then I love it too.
