MAKE WEIRD GAMES w/ Nat Mesnard

3rd Sundays @ 12:45p-3p

In this workshop, we'll take inspiration from "weird" story games and other innovative indie titles to playstorm new game concepts, systems, and mechanics for narrative tabletop games.

Each session will involve an expansive game-studies discussion that investigates one or more contemporary roleplaying game systems. We'll delve into zines, pass around tactile components, and identify key pillars of design.

Then, either solo or in small groups, participants will be invited to hack or otherwise play with elements of the game(s) we've discussed—developing a piece of a larger tabletop game, or inventing an entirely new one. You will leave each session with a new design.

All experience levels are welcome! Attend to design your first story game, or renew your already-developed practice. Come for the full series, or drop in for one session.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

PAST WORKSHOPS

3/22/2026 @ 12:45p-3p
Legos & Space Goblins!
We'll investigate Viditya Voleti's Space Goblins!, a zine that creates immersion and collaborative "world building" through the use of legos to co-create a goblin spaceship. What mischievous feelings, memories, and design potentials lurk within interlocking building blocks?

4/19/2026 @ 12:45p-3p
Dominoes & The Details of Our Escape
We'll investigate The Details of Our Escape, a collaborative zine by Tyler Crumrine, Linnea Sterte, and Renee Gladman that uses dominoes to tell the story of a massive, 2000-strong Caravan. How is collective travel brought to life by numbered, two-sided rectangular tiles?

5/17/2026 @12:45p-3p
Scrabble Tiles & Spell: The RPG
We'll investigate Spell: The RPG by Taylor Curreysmith, a zine that outlines an evocative magic system whereby players draw random letter tiles to spell out magic abilities. How can spelling-game mechanics invoke experiences of arcane weaving?

Great for a medium chewer!
Flavor Name: Bacon, Size: Medium
Bought this for my Standard Poodle. He's a year old, 65 pounds, and loves to chew but doesn't have the jaw strength of some of my previous dogs (I think my pit bull would have destroyed this in short order!). This works well for him; it's his favorite toy for fetching. It bounces in an unpredictable manner when you throw it so he has fun chasing and retrieving it. It is heavy so be careful throwing it in the house! I like these shapes better than balls that will roll far under things and be difficult to retrieve. I don't know that I would leave him alone with it in case he did chew a piece off, but for monitored play I highly recommend. I'll definitely buy more if these ever wear out but I don't see that happening in the near future!

Smells like rubber.
Flavor Name: Bacon, Size: Medium
I bought this flavored nylabone for my dog because he had one that he just loved and it finally had to be thrown out. So I bought him this one and he won't even chew on it. All it smells like is rubber. No flavor smell AT ALL. But our other dog chews anything and he chews this so I kept it. I won't buy nylabone again.

Super chewer approved
Flavor Name: Peanut Butter, Size: Large
One of the few safe chewy bones for a super chewer. Very durable, an appropriate price, and a good size for our 70lb pitty.

The best toys for dogs I could ever find
Size: X Large
I have bull terriers. They chew wood for fun... But this brand in the appropiate size and in any shape has been the best thing for them! They last for a very long time (they have not even dented them and they've had one (another shape) for the last two years. Now I bought these bones so that they can play together, each graving one side of it. They have so much fun! They are worth every penny.

Best chew toy
Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
Kong toys are the best. They hold up through the heavy chewing stage. Definitely recommend if you have a heavy chewer.
