🍵 Matcha Powder🇯🇵 Izu Peninsula☕ Strong Caffeine🥄 Whisk Preparation

Stone-ground Japanese matcha from the Izu peninsula — the powdered green tea where the leaf is consumed whole. Vibrant green, vegetal, built for whisk or latte.

Matcha is the only tea on Earth where the leaf isn't strained out — it's ground to a fine powder and whisked into the water, so the entire leaf is consumed in the cup. The process starts with shade-growing: the tea bushes are covered for several weeks before harvest, which forces the plant to produce more chlorophyll and theanine, deepening the colour and the umami character. The shaded leaves are steamed, dried, de-stemmed, and then stone-ground between granite mills — a slow process that produces about 30 grams per hour. The resulting powder is bright, almost neon green; the cup is thick, vegetal, faintly sweet, with a long umami finish.

The Sampson Izu is a peninsula matcha sitting between ceremonial and culinary grade. It's smooth enough to whisk straight (½ teaspoon, 60 ml hot water, bamboo chasen, W-motion until frothy) and structured enough to stand up in a latte. Vivid green colour and a quick froth are the visual markers of proper grinding and storage.

The Sampson Promise

We only put ingredients in our products that we would use on our own family. Every ingredient has a purpose. If it doesn’t need to be there, it isn’t.

Type

Powdered Green Tea

Caffeine

Strong

Origin

Izu Peninsula, Japan

Format

Stone-Ground Powder

Whisk Ratio

½ tsp / 60ml water

Servings

~25 bowls (30g)

Tasting Notes

🌱

Vegetal & Umami

Body

A thick, almost soup-like mouthfeel — this is what consuming the whole leaf does. The flavour is bright vegetal up front, with a long, savoury umami back-end that lasts after the swallow.

🍯

Soft Sweet Edge

Aroma

Smells of fresh-cut grass and a faint sweetness — the shade-growing pulls the bitterness down. Quality matcha is sweet-grassy, not bitter-grassy.

💚

Green-On-Green

Visual

A proper matcha is bright, almost neon green. Dull or yellowish powder means low-quality leaves or oxidised storage. The Sampson Izu shows the vivid colour the powder should have.

How to Brew

01

Sift

Sift ½ teaspoon (about 1g) of matcha into a bowl through a fine sieve. Matcha clumps in the bag; sifting is the difference between a smooth cup and a lumpy one.

02

Add Hot Water

Heat water to about 80°C (175°F) — boiling water makes matcha bitter. Pour 60 ml (about 2oz) over the sifted powder.

03

Whisk W-Motion

Use a chasen (bamboo whisk) and whisk briskly in a W-motion across the bowl, not in circles. About 15 seconds. The cup should froth into a fine, persistent green foam.

Water

80°C

Whisk Time

~15 sec

Per Bowl

½ tsp

For a latte: whisk the matcha with 60 ml hot water first to fully dissolve, then pour over warmed milk. Whisking matcha directly into milk doesn't work — the powder needs water to bloom first.

About the Tea

🍃

Shade-Grown Leaf

The Source

Tea bushes covered for ~3 weeks before harvest. The shading triples the chlorophyll, increases theanine (the umami amino acid), and decreases catechins (the bitter compounds). The leaves come out darker green, sweeter, more savoury than standard green-tea leaf.

⚙️

Stone-Ground

The Process

Granite mills grind the de-stemmed leaf into a fine powder at about 30 grams per hour. The slow grind keeps the heat low and preserves the volatile aromatics. Industrial grinders are faster but heat-damage the powder.

🌊

Izu Peninsula

The Origin

Izu sits southwest of Tokyo, on the Pacific coast — a peninsula with a milder, maritime climate than the inland matcha regions of Uji or Nishio. The tea grown here has a slightly softer, less assertive umami character than Uji matcha, which makes it work well for both whisked and latte preparations.

In the tin

Stone-ground Japanese green tea powder.

Origin & Sourcing

Stone-ground matcha from the Izu peninsula in southwest Japan, processed in the standard matcha method — shade-growing, steaming, de-stemming, slow stone-grinding. Packed in small, oxygen-protective batches for the Sampson shelf. Matcha is light- and oxygen-sensitive — store cold and use within a few months of opening.

Well made, but not a good fit for Volvo XC40
One issue with this style of holder, is that the swing arm and holder add a fair amount of weight and extends that weight away from the vent, applying quite a bit more leverage on the vent. It may not be as much of an issue on horizontal vents, but the vertical vents on an XC40 will want to swing side-to-side with all that weight. As for the build of this particular holder, my only real gripe is the adjustment for the swing arm - after tightening the knob, there will still be some play in the arm...you have to jiggle it while tightening it down to fully secure it. The position of the release button allows one-handed removal of the phone, but really only works by pinching with your thumb on the screen. The clip for the vent accommodates relatively wide fins and the tabs can be rotated to help with stability or removed to provide more clearance (though rubberized tabs would be much more helpful).

Good solid product
Purchased in February of 2025. Very solid item. Use it constantly in our 2011 4Runner and 2017 CX5. This unit attaches firmly to vent fins in both cars. I use iPhone for maps programs and streaming music. When traveling I'm constantly rotating device 90 degrees to use phone in portrait and landscape positions. Unit has shown no signs of losing ability to firmly hold desired position despite frequent rotations. It holds firmly where you place it. Initially I had concerns about placement on dash and blocking view of radio face, clock, MPG indicator, and other displays. Didn't take too long to realize the flexibility of this thing and the many, many positions you can place it due to multiple rotational joints. Pricing was fair. If this ever wears out, I will want to buy another.

Happy with purchase, easy to install, exactly what I needed
For many years, I'd been using a similar item with a wedge-type vent mount that finally stretched out and became unusable. When searching for a replacement, I wanted to try one with a different type of mount and I looked at many brands/types of holders. This one seemed to be the best item for the price ($8.99 at the time). So far, I'm very happy with it. I got it in a timely manner, and it was exactly as advertised. I had no problems attaching the hook to the vent fin and securing it. I use it for a GPS, and since the holder is designed to stand out away from the vent a bit, my device is easier to see than previously and details are easier to read. It wobbles, occasionally, but the holder's not loose, at all, and it doesn't affect my ability to read the device. The frame is barely just big enough to hold my GPS, but so far that hasn't been a problem. The device slides into the frame easily, locks securely, and stays put. The holder pops open at the touch of a button on the back, and the device can be removed easily, without issue.

Prevents me from adjusting the air vent up or down
It's true that it doesn't block the air flow. I had to put it on the left passenger side vent to retain the ability to point the driver's air vents where I want. With it over there, I have to turn my head too far to the right when I'm driving to see my phone, and the passenger can't adjust the vent up or down. Also, phone can't tilt as far left and right as other ones. Good price, unique design, easy to install, feels sturdy, holds iPhone SE fine, and doesn't block my view of the entertainment system.

BETTER THAN A CUP HOLDER
I had a cup-holder mount and it was always falling apart. No matter how it was turned, to unfasten my phone I had to move the spring part of the holder in the same direction that removes the entire clip from the stem of the mount. Of course, I eventually lost the clip. What a bad idea. And, in a 4-Runner, on my cupholder, MAPS sometines got lost and I would have to hold my phone up to the windshield for a minute to get back MAPS back on track. Also not a good Idea. We're not supposed to be handeling a phone and driving so holding my phone up to the windshield is kinda like flagging down a cop. (The 4-Runner has hand-free phone service, as well as some kind of circuitious navigation but it's always lost.) . So, for about $9 on sale, I though I would try one of these LISEN mounts. It works great ! Really. Easy to attach securely but scratchlessly it to my center AC/heat vent and It is infantly moveable. Swing the arm 360 degrees, in and out, phone up or saideways, and tilt the phone to me or the Boss. If I get bored, I can relocate it anywhere along the center vents, or even over to my side vent if I have nothing better to do.. It is sturdy, quiet, easy to clamp in my S21, and release is simplye by pushing the button on the back. Sooo much better that my previous mount, for a third of the price. It might be the best $9 you ever spent. And still worthwhile,if you have to shell out the $18. (But I always try to avoid paying full price for anything). Enjoy !
