Organic Meadow Seed Mix - Dorset

Like all our "direct harvest" mixes, this is a diverse and highly floristic seed mix, with a high proportion of wildflowers to grasses - more than 50% wildflowers, as opposed to the 20% in generic mixes. This makes it an exciting mix and great value for money too.

It's very unusual insofar as it's organic - a rare thing in the wildflower seed world, for some reason. It's harvested from an organic farm outside Piddletrenthide in Dorset dating from at least the 14th century. The seed mix is suitable for a range of neutral soils - including heavier soils. The grassland from which it is taken is categorized as MG5a.

The picture shows it at a solar site we seeded in Hampshire a few years back, which has been a great success.

Species making up over 4% of the mix are shown in bold.

Typical Major Wildflower Species:

Greater knapweed Centaurea scabiosa

Eyebright Euphrasia nemerosa

Catsear Hypochoeris radicata

Rough Hawkbit Leontodon hispidus

Black Medic Medicago lupulina

Red Bartsia Odontites verna

Ribwort Plantain Plantago lanceolata

Self-heal Prunella vulgaris

Meadow Buttercup Ranunculus acris

Yellow Rattle Rhinanthus minor

Greater Stitchwort Stellaria holostea

Wild Red Clover Trifolium pratense

Grasses:

Crested dog's-tail Cynosurus cristatus

Cocksfoot Dactylis glomerata

Sheep's fescue Festuca ovina

Red Fescue Festuca rubra

Other species are present in smaller quantities.

Sowing Rate: 3g to 4g per square metre, 12kg to 16kg per acre.
Seed mixtures may be ordered in 1 kg increments from 1 kg upwards. Quantities from 2 kg to 10 kg at the 2 kg rate and over 10 kg at the 10 kg rate.

 Supplier : Heritage Seeds

We strongly recommend reading up on wildflower meadows before buying seed - see our resources section and brief guide to preparation and aftercare, which includes links to our "how to" blogs and video.

Although we test our seed and it has high germination rates, you need to be careful about initial care and establishing an annual regime. Don't be put off though - once you get the hang of it it's pretty straightforward.

Great for boys AND MOMS
Format: Paperback
Saw an ad for the series online and wanted to buy just one book to try. Received with 2 day Prime. Book was new. So, not only does this book have an incredible, intriguing story that sucked in my 10 year old who hates reading and struggles to read, it had me at Hello. The beginning of the book is filled with recipes! Was totally not expecting that! So for this Momma, under promise-over deliver was the theme here. Purchasing the rest of the books! Also look online for worksheets that parents have put together to go along with these books. Totally worth it. Happy Reading! AND Cooking!

Great reads for all levels
Format: Paperback
I bought 2 for a 6th grade boy I tutor. He has a beginning interest in history. He's been 'eating' these books up! These are well written, but not complex to turn a young reader off. There are many alternative resources to listed to dive into if a particular person or event sparks interest with the reader. There is appropriate vocabulary with explanations on some- others open a chance for my student & I to have a deeper discussion to clarify meaning & connect information.

Great book for an (almost) 11 year old to learn about WW2
Format: Paperback
My (almost) 11 year old says he enjoyed this book because it gives specific details and has pictures of what was going on making it easy to understand what was happening. The only thing he’d change was that the pictures weren’t in color (lol)!
