What it's used for

  • Upper floor decking laid over timber joists in new-build and renovation projects
  • Loft conversions where a solid, load-bearing floor deck is required
  • Ground floor construction over joists where moisture during build is a concern
  • Mezzanine floors and timber frame construction requiring a structural walking surface

Fitting and handling

Store boards flat and off the ground, under cover, before installation to prevent moisture uptake from the slab or ground beneath. Apply PVA or flooring adhesive to the tongue and groove joint before tapping boards together, then fix through the face or secret-nail through the tongue at each joist, using ring-shank nails or screws at no more than 300mm centres. Leave a 10mm expansion gap around the perimeter of the room before laying any finished floor covering such as carpet, laminate, or vinyl.

FAQ

What is the difference between P5 and standard chipboard flooring?

P5 chipboard is manufactured with a moisture-resistant resin binder, making it significantly more tolerant of site moisture during construction than standard P4 or plain chipboard. It is less likely to swell at the edges if exposed to temporary dampness, though it is not waterproof and should not be left permanently wet.

Should I use 18mm or 22mm P5 chipboard for my floor?

For most domestic upper floors with joists at 450mm centres, 18mm is generally sufficient. Where joists are at 600mm centres, or where the floor will carry heavier loads such as in a loft conversion used as a habitable room, 22mm is the recommended choice for additional stiffness and load distribution.

Can P5 chipboard flooring be used in a loft conversion?

Yes. P5 tongue and groove chipboard is widely used in loft conversions across the UK as the structural floor deck. The interlocking T&G profile spreads loads across adjoining boards and reduces squeaking over time, making it well suited to habitable loft rooms. Always check that your joist sizing and spacing meet building regulations for the intended use.

Not that great
Huge "The Simpsons" fan. I watched all the episodes and read a lot of the comics and enjoy most. This one however was quite boring. Turns out I'm just not a big fan of Chief Wiggum. I really enjoyed The "Homer" and "Bart" book. But not this one. Maybe if you love Wiggum you'll love it. If you're not too fond of him then I wouldn't buy it.

Good for my collection.
Format: Hardcover
This was another quick and entertaining read. This instalment wasn't as enjoyable as some of the other books but it was still good. I'm glad to have it in my collection.

Great story and illustrations!
I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my toddler nephew and it became his favorite new book of the year! I had read the story randomly in a store some years ago as the title, awards, and cover illustration caught my eye. Growing up as a 90s kid, I cannot recall being exposed to a variety of diverse books especially ones that take place in the city and Last Stop on Market Street stuck with me. It depicts the city life well, how for some the only transportation is the bus, and the value of community by giving your time to help and connect with others. The illustrations are beautifully done and the story captures both CJ's imaginations and observations wells. My brother especially loved how wise CJ's grandmother is as she guides him during their journey and teaches him at a young age how to help those in need.

A beautifully written and illustrated story about a young boy and his Nana and their loving spirit they share with others
Format: Hardcover
This is a simple, but beautiful story with heart. It is told by a little boy who apparently lives with his Nana. The illustrations are scenes painted in brilliant colors. C.J., the boy has many questions to ask his Nana, like why they have to ride the bus or always to do the same thing every Sunday? Nana patiently and gently answers every question and helps C.J. to open his eyes and his mind to the beauty around him. This book teachers children compassion and to look for good and beauty in people and their surroundings. It models empathy for those who have less than one has. Nana has a lovely spirit and great wisdom. She makes one feel that she is a lady one would like to know. Nana teaches the joy of giving back to others. This is a book I will read again and again.
