The Portugal, an old and popular quince, was brought to the UK by noted naturalist and gardener John Tradescent in the early 17th century. Tradescent was a great plant finder and, like his son, gardener to the King. Quince was a common ingredient in medieval and and Elizabethan cooking, before apples and pears became popular. Portugal has a reputation for bearing the earliest and best flavoured fruit for quince jelly, although it is perhaps the least hardy of the quince varieties recommended for growing in the UK. Like other quinces it has attractive blossom and is self fertile.

All our quince trees are bare root, so they are only available between November and April. During lifting season, there will be a delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders taken from June-October will be confirmed in late October/ early November after a nursery stock take, for dispatch from November.
