Since the age of sixteen I have been returning often to the land of my youth, sometimes more than twice each year. In February of this year 2000, I experienced one of the most beautiful trips to Prince Rupert that I have ever made. 

Four of us were on our way to the All Native Basketball Tournament in Prince Rupert with stopovers in Burns Lake and Hazelton, to rest and say hello to friends in the area. In Hazelton I became the tour guide and took everyone on a visit to Ksan, Kispiox, Kitwancool and Kitwanga; retracing steps that I had taken in the late 80’s. The evening came to an end with beautiful clear skies as we walked around the totems at Kispiox. There was a blanket of snow on the ground as we photographed the totems down by the Skeena River, near the mouth of the Kispiox River.

It was a thrill to be back in the familiar country of my teen years, and the years I spent studying at Ksan. The evening inspired a new work that presented itself through pictures from a study session at the Totems at Dusk in the village of Kispiox in Northern BC.
