About This Class

Want to create textural embroidery that pops off the fabric? Join fiber artist and author Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ to explore the art of stumpwork through a charming strawberry design. Stumpwork is a dimensional embroidery technique that uses padding and wire to create sculptural elements that lift away from the fabric. In this 3‑hour workshop, Melissa will guide you through each step of building your own 3D strawberry and leaves while learning a variety of stitches and techniques.

What We’ll Cover

This class introduces the foundations of stumpwork and helps you build confidence with dimensional embroidery. You’ll practice a variety of stitches and learn how to shape, support, and finish raised elements.

• Creating a sculptural strawberry and raised leaves
• Working with padding and wire for 3D structure
• Stem stitch, pistil stitch, detached chain stitch, berry stitch
• Couching, long and short satin stitch, buttonhole stitch
• Corded detached buttonhole stitch

Melissa Galbraith is the fiber artist behind MCreativeJ. Born and raised in the desert of Washington state, she learned to love handmade creativity from her mother at an early age. Now a full‑time artist, Melissa is known for her playful use of texture and pattern in embroidery. For her, stitching is like coloring with needle and thread—an inviting, joyful way to bring art to life.
