Treated decking utility rail in 38mm x 69mm section and 3.6 metre lengths is designed for use as a top or bottom rail in timber balustrade systems, fixed between newel posts to carry spindles and balusters on raised decks, steps, and balconies.

Specifications

Material Softwood timber
Treatment Pressure treated (preservative treated)
Nominal Size 38mm x 69mm
Length 3.6 metres
Profile Utility rail (flat/rectangular section)
Finish Sawn
Use Class UC3 (above ground, exposed outdoor use)

What it's used for

  • Top rail or base rail in decking balustrade panels fitted between newel posts
  • Handrail support framing on raised garden decks, steps, and platforms
  • Bottom rail for enclosing spindles and balusters on balconies and verandas
  • Structural framing rail wherever a treated 38 x 69mm section is needed in outdoor joinery

Fitting and handling

Allow the rails to acclimatise for 24 to 48 hours on site before cutting and fixing, particularly in warm or dry conditions. Fix securely to newel posts using galvanised or stainless-steel fixings to avoid corrosive reaction with the preservative treatment. When housing spindles between top and bottom rails, pair with decking fillets to allow for natural timber movement and reduce the risk of splitting over time. If painting, staining, or oiling, apply a suitable exterior finish to all cut ends promptly to maintain the protection provided by the pressure treatment.

FAQ

What is the difference between a utility rail and a standard handrail?

A utility rail is a plain rectangular section used as the structural top or bottom member in a balustrade frame. A shaped handrail typically has a moulded or rounded profile designed to be gripped by hand. Utility rails are used in pairs to hold spindles, with the shaped handrail sometimes fitted on top.

Do I need to treat the cut ends of pressure treated decking rail?

Yes. Cutting exposes untreated timber below the surface. Apply an end-grain preservative or exterior wood treatment to all cut ends before fixing to maintain protection against moisture and decay.

What length spindle spacing should I use with 38mm x 69mm balustrade rail?

UK building regulations require that gaps between balusters do not allow a 100mm sphere to pass through. For most domestic decking and stair balustrades, spindles are spaced at roughly 100mm centres, but always check the current Building Regulations Approved Document K before finalising your layout.

Gorgeous in person!
Color: White & Black, Size: 51"x67", Color: White & Black, Size: 51"x67"
This throw is gorgeous! Quality and elegance fill the room. It is well made and looks exactly like the photo and description. Has the black tips which is what I needed to bring my chair to life. It has a soft lining against your skin and i really didn't have to do much when I removed it from its packaging. It was nice and fluffy and looked beautiful draped on my chair. Many reviews said to shake it to bring flattened fur fluffy again but not on this one. I really love the black shading on it, its just enough. Beautifully packaged and arrived next day! Doesn't get too much better than this!

Gorgeous faux fur! Heavy, thick, soft and soothing under the skin, and collapsed on my bed in beautiful, real-looking folds… very satisfying!

Great quality. It is a very soft, thick throw to snuggle right up into. Looks so good drapped over my recliner that I bought a second one. Black and white throw pictured and folded in half. I am very pleased.

Soft and beautiful!
Color: Brown, Size: 60"x80"
Love it! So soft and pretty. A little small for my queen sized bed, I would size up. But beautiful and warm, feels high quality. No shedding.

DO NOT PUT IN DRYER
Color: Cream&grey, Size: 60"x80"
Very soft, very comfortable, very warm, sheds a lot at first. 9/10 for initial impression. So how do you wash it? The instructions say take it to a professional dry cleaner which costs more than the blanket, so that option is out. I've been looking everywhere and everyone says something different, I've ruined two blankets trying to figure it out how to clean them. DO NOT PUT IN YOUR DRYER WITH HEAT, EVER, PERIOD. I ruined my second blanket by putting it in the dryer for just 7 minutes on 'delicate' heat, just don't do it. Even using no heat in the dryer will cause the material to become slightly more abrasive after each cycle. MACHINELESS AIR DRY ONLY. The faux fur has an insanely low fraying point and even getting it moderately warm causes it to become abrasive and have a harsh tangled 'dog blanket' feel to it that is permanent. COLD WASH ONLY ON DELICATE. This seems to have little to no effect on the quality of the blanket. Use high quality detergent with little to no additives for delicates and a laundry bag. Fabric softeners are a big NO, they will shorten the life of your blanket substantially. For colors, The Cream and Grey and Yellow and Grey are very nice and picture accurate. The Camal was far darker than the images would have you believe and it has a greenish copper tint to it. The Ivory looks awful with how they brushed the tips.
