Why You'll Love It

The Stratum Link Band is the most architecturally ambitious piece in our collection — a 7mm wide solid 14K gold band constructed from three rows of offset rectangular links, each link a polished gold brick separated from its neighbors by a narrow open gap, the rows staggered like courses of masonry so that no two vertical joints align. The open-work construction — the gaps between links visible through the band — gives the Stratum a lightness that its 7mm width would not suggest: it sits on the finger with presence and authority, but catches light through its structure in a way that a solid band cannot. The result is a ring that reads as a serious architectural statement from across a room and reveals its construction — the individual links, the staggered joints, the open gaps — up close.

Design Details

  • Width: 7mm
  • Construction: Three-row offset brick link — rectangular links in staggered courses, open-work gaps between links
  • Profile: Flat-top with slightly curved outer edges
  • Finish: High-polish throughout — all link faces and edges
  • Interior finish: Smooth, high-polish comfort fit
  • Gender: Unisex — designed and proportioned to be worn by anyone
  • Available in: 14K Yellow Gold, 14K White Gold, 14K Rose Gold

The Brick Link Construction

The brick link pattern — three rows of rectangular links staggered so that each link spans the joint between two links in the row above and below — is one of the oldest structural patterns in architecture, used in masonry construction for thousands of years because it distributes load across joints and prevents any single line of weakness from running through the structure. In the Stratum, this pattern is translated into gold: each rectangular link is a solid gold brick, polished to a mirror finish on all faces, separated from its neighbors by a narrow open gap that allows light to pass through the band. The staggered offset means that the band has no continuous vertical joint — the eye moves across the surface in a diagonal rhythm, following the offset pattern from one row to the next.

Why Open-Work?

The open-work construction of the Stratum — the visible gaps between links — is what distinguishes it from a solid engraved band. A solid band with a brick pattern engraved on its surface reads as a flat graphic; the Stratum reads as a three-dimensional structure, because it is one. The gaps between links allow light to pass through the band, creating a play of light and shadow across the finger that changes as the hand moves. From above, the Stratum appears as a continuous field of polished gold rectangles. From the side, the open gaps are visible, giving the band a depth and a complexity that a solid band cannot achieve. The open-work construction also makes the Stratum lighter than its 7mm width suggests — a band that wears with presence without weight.

Our Story

In our Queens atelier, the Stratum was designed as our answer to a question that the best unisex jewelry always asks: what does a ring look like when it is designed for the finger rather than for a gender? The 7mm width was chosen because it is the width at which a band stops reading as a wedding band and starts reading as a statement — a piece of jewelry that announces itself. The brick link construction was chosen because it is the most honest structural pattern we know: no decoration, no applied ornament, just the geometry of the links and the rhythm of the offset joints. Named for the Latin word for layer — stratum — the Stratum Link Band is a ring built in layers, worn in layers, and understood in layers: first as a bold gold band, then as a link construction, then as an open-work structure that carries light through its gaps.

Styling Notes

The Stratum is most powerful worn alone — the 7mm width and the open-work construction command the finger completely. Stack it with a plain gold band for a mixed-texture look: the polished brick links create a rich contrast with the smooth, continuous surface of a plain band. In yellow gold, the warm metal gives the link construction a rich, architectural depth. In white gold, the cool metal makes the open-work gaps more visible, emphasizing the structural quality of the design. In rose gold, the warm blush metal gives the Stratum a romantic, editorial quality that is unexpected for such a bold construction.

so fun!
Format: Kindle
With a title like Stinkbird Has a Superpower, I obviously had to grab a copy and read it. To be honest, when I first saw it, I didn’t realize the stinkbird is a real bird – otherwise known as the hoatzin which lives in the Amazon rainforest. I thought it was more of a cartoon character name, but I was wrong and that new knowledge made the book all the more appealing to me. I’m firmly in the camp that believes a children’s book should be one that both adults and kids can enjoy, and Stinkbird Has a Superpower definitely fits the bill! I chuckled at the back and forth between the father bird and his baby – the little chick was seriously adorable in both appearance and interaction. I learned a lot of interesting facts, and I loved the bright colors and vivid illustrations. And I think my nephews will be delighted to learn more about the stinkbird on the pages of this fun book, too (because what little boy wouldn’t want to learn about a stinky creature? lol). The format of the conversation between the father and chick allows similar engagement on the part of the adult/child reader pairing, and I foresee copious giggles from my nephews on a couple of pages. Bottom Line: Colorful illustrations, intriguing science, a surprising superpower (that isn’t what you think it’s going to be) and of course a stinkbird – Stinkbird Has a Superpower by Jill Esbaum and Bob Shea has all the ingredients for a fun and educational picture book, and the result is delightful in every way! Children and adults alike will love this book, and they’ll learn a lot at the same time. A great book for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, and anyone who has littles in their lives to add to their library. (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)

True facts in a really fun, sweet story
Format: Hardcover
I’m not usually a fan of informational books, but this one gives lots of cool facts about a certain bird by weaving them into a fun, sweet father/son story. Pictures are adorable too!

Fun and filled with facts
Format: Hardcover
Stinkbird is a humorous, kid-centric tale featuring the Amazonian hoatzin bird. It's filled with interesting facts about this stinky bird. Esbaum's distinct, fun voice is inviting, and Shea's illustrations are lush and colorful. Backmatter is engaging and amusing, too! This will be a terrific addition to classrooms, libraries, and home bookshelves.

READ BEFORE GIVING TO A CHILD
Format: Paperback
Five stars in hopes it is listed at the top. PLEASE read before you give this to your child! The art work is gorgeous, a very gift able book! I got this for my dragon loving 11yr old as a Christmas book to enjoy in December. Let me just tell you a quick run down of the book.... this child is the only child left unadopted at an orphanage run by a nasty woman and her evil dog. The woman is annoyed by the child and as punishment she cancels Christmas and puts a chain around her ankle and locks her in a dog kennel (yes it says this many times, not simply implied but directly said it and a drawing of it). Finally a little Christmas magic and glimmer of joy when a snow dragon frees her for one quick adventure. That portion is a cute story but it's a very short part in the book. When the adventure is over the child is snuck back in and ankle chain back on and back in the dog kennel. The mean woman returns and says it's time to play a game called "chase".....then the book details what this game is.... this mean woman makes the orphans hold bones and tells them to run, then her evil dog is allowed to chase the kids (scary, not a fun dog frolicking with happy children).....finally at the end the little girl and her sweet dancing dog are adopted. But this book is so sad, this is not a sweet story or Christmas fun. I'm returning the book bc I feel like it will make my child sad instead of enjoy a cute Christmas story. If you are an adoptive parent or a foster parent this may really trigger your children, any child who is sensitive would probably not like this book. However every child is different so for some kids they may be less bothered and just enjoy the dragon and cute last page with the new family walking away together. But read the book for yourself before giving it to a child. I'm 37 with no history of childhood trauma myself and I found this book to be a bit much. I use to be a foster mom and I really wanted to write a review so parents would understand what's in this book bc I almost didn't read it before giving it to my child for Christmas! Glad I read it! The story could have been adorable if they let the dragon be the main part of the story. Not the abuse the child is suffering in the orphanage.

Lovely Winter Solstice Book
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
My son loved this winter solstice story! Told by the perspective of the animals, each one brings a little something to share with the others as they decorate a tree together with their items and it's exactly what I wanted in a winter solstice story for my 4 year old. Not too complex which is ideal for younger children, not soly describing the change of season. I feel like this is more of the heart of winter solstice, coming together with friends and family, being generous and having gratitude, and over all sharing light with each other in the longest night of the year. My son's favorite page is definitely the fold out!
