אלא שהספר אינו מסתפק בעדות על האובדן. הרשקוביץ יוצא בו למסע פיוטי המבקש לברר מה נותר מן הקשר עם האהובים לאחר מותם, והאם השירה יכולה לשמש מקום מפגש בין החיים לבין מי שאינם עוד. שיריו אינם שירי זיכרון במובנם המקובל, אלא שירים של שיחה. שיחה עם אב ואם שאינם, עם סבתא שהלכה, עם בית שאבד ועם עולם שנגדע באחת.

מתוך הכאב הפרטי צומחת יצירה העוסקת בשאלות רחבות של נוכחות והיעדר, זיכרון והמשכיות, חיים ומוות. בלשון עדינה ומדויקת, ולעיתים מתוך זיקה למקורות, לתפילה ולנופי הנגב, מבקש הרשקוביץ להעניק צורה למה שאינו ניתן לאחיזה, להד שנותר לאחר האובדן ולקשרים שמוסיפים להתקיים גם כאשר נדמה שהכול הסתיים.

איוריהן של אמו וסבתו, המשולבים בספר, מוסיפים ממד מוחשי לדיאלוג הזה. יחד עם השירים הם יוצרים מרחב שבו האמנות הופכת לא רק למעשה של זיכרון, אלא גם למעשה של המשך חיים.
