Earmuff Wrasse (Halichoeres melasmapomus)
Overview

The Earmuff Wrasse is a vibrant and peaceful reef fish named for its distinctive dark markings over the eyes that resemble earmuffs. Displaying a colorful mix of green, yellow, and red along its body, this wrasse is active, reef-safe, and adds both movement and beauty to mature aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia and the Philippines, Halichoeres melasmapomus inhabits coral reefs and rubble zones, foraging among crevices and sandy patches for small crustaceans and invertebrates.

Feeding

An omnivore that thrives on a diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. It will also graze naturally on live rock microfauna. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species. Ideal companions include gobies, anthias, tangs, and other non-aggressive wrasses. Avoid aggressive or overly dominant fish.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though minor territorial behavior may occur toward similar-sized wrasses in small aquariums. Provide ample rockwork and a sand bed for foraging and resting.

Experience Level

Suitable for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, colorful, and easy to maintain in mature, stable aquariums with proper hiding spots.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG
  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Peaceful, hardy, and visually striking, the Earmuff Wrasse is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a small, reef-safe wrasse that adds color, activity, and natural pest control to a marine aquarium.

Heavy Duty!!
Performed extremely well. No buzzzing or poor connection. Extremely well built and has been working issue free for over 6 months! Instalation can be a bit difficult due to size and weight. Not really a problem.

Seems to be ok for the money
We use it to power a 2000w inverter for the refrigerator and microwave on our boat where sometimes it will stay on continuously throughout the day and it hasn't let us down. As others have said, the terminals are awful close together but for the money, it's worth it.

Been doing great since 2020
Used this to replace the charging solenoid on my diesel motorhome. Originally used a White-Rodgers OEM relay and it only lasted about 18 months. This has been going strong since 2020 and I use my motorhome about 10 months out of the year with lots of miles.

Buy something better
This relay has experienced failure again after just a couple of months of use. It's not the mag coil that fails but rather the contacts are of such low quality that they corrode beyond their ability to conduct power, and fast. I have had to change two of these so far and am on the third one. The seller will ship replacements but who wants to keep replacing them? I have to travel in my RV with a spare. This relay has never been exposed to the elements. It's safely mounted inside a sealed bay. Be aware of any brands that look like this, they are all the same.
