Full length portrait of Wilfred Thesiger standing with Ghazala ('the gazelle'), a camel which Wilfred Thesiger rode from Al Ain to Sharjah, and another camel. Wilfred Thesiger (left) stands holding Ghazala's head rope in the midst of rocky sand littered with camel droppings. He wears a khanjar (dagger) on a cartridge belt over his light coloured thobe (long shirt). Ghazala, a famous thoroughbred Batina camel owned by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and renowned for its beauty and speed, stands in profile. Its body faces towards the left, but its head is looking off into the far right distance. A second camel stands just behind Ghazala (centre right). In the distance beyond a low dune rises above the flat sand. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan loaned Ghazala to Wilfred Thesiger for his May 1-10, 1948 journey from Al Ain oasis to Sharjah.
