De Acer palmatum oftewel Japanse esdoorn is een bladverliezende heester en onderscheidt zich door z'n unieke rode bladkleur in het voorjaar. De lentekleuren van de bladeren zijn zo mooi dat ze kunnen wedijveren met de meeste bloemen. Het felrode loof van de Acer palmatum wordt in de zomer donkerroze tot blauwachtig groen en gaat in de herfst over naar prachtig tinten - rood en oranje.
