Pianist McCoy Tyner zocht op zijn Blue Note-opnames van eind jaren 60 steeds vaker inspiratie bij 'Moeder Afrika', met stukken als "African Village" en "Message from the Nile". Op zijn album Asante uit 1970 traden deze invloeden volledig op de voorgrond met een krachtige set, geworteld in de wervelende percussieve ritmes van drummer Billy Hart en percussionist Mtume.

Bassist Buster Williams, gitarist Ted Dunbar en altsaxofonist Andrew White maken de rest van dit buitengewone ensemble compleet. De set van vier nummers bevat ook de etherische zang van Songai op het titelnummer en de uitgebreide opener "Malika". Hoewel elementen van de modale jazz die Tyner pionierde in het John Coltrane Quartet door het album stromen — het meest zichtbaar op de kinetische uitsmijter "Fulfillment" — wees de muziek hier ook al naar de toekomstige creatieve richtingen die Tyner later zou verkennen.

They are a fraction of the cost though and a great “beater” work shirt / hang out shirt. It’s nice wearing something that looks and feels decent, but if something happens to it, you can toss and it and pick up another for the cost of a chipotle burrito.
