Aerjen Jansz. Ruijs (1750-1818) uit de Zijpe in de kop van Noord-Holland voer als matroos in 1783 en 1784 mee op walvisvaarten naar Groenland en Spitsbergen. Zijn ervaringen heeft hij vastgelegd in een tweetal journalen, die opvallen door de zeer persoonlijke, bloemrijke en beeldende taal. Scheepsjournalen zijn er vele, maar zelden zijn ze zo kleurrijk geschreven. Ook bijzonder is dat de schrijver een eenvoudige matroos was. De journalen voeren de lezer mee in een Arctische wereld waar het ‘knoffeligh kout’ is en de wind langs je lichaam waait ‘alsof je geen kleere aan hebt’. In het boek zijn de teksten van beide journalen opgenomen. De bezorging ervan was in handen van een Alkmaarse transcriptiegroep, bestaande uit Gery Baars-Visser, Hans Besseling, Netty Bleichrodt-Vegter, Harry de Raad en Piet Schilte. De journaalteksten worden voorafgegaan door een uitgebreide historische inleiding waaraan is meegewerkt door emeritus hoogleraar maritieme geschiedenis Jaap R. Bruijn en historica Ineke Vonk-Uitgeest. De uitgave gaat vergezeld van vele zeldzame en fraaie illustraties. Het geheel vormt een welkome aanvulling op de kennis van de Noord-Hollandse walvisvaart in de achttiende eeuw. Daarnaast bieden de journalen een unieke leeservaring.

I liked the worlds and the characters. The prophesy is confusing in that I would think, since all worlds ore on a path to destruction, the angels would want their world to be saved. I am sure there is more evil that will be revealed as the series proceeds. I dislike a prolonged “poor little me” trope and the main character has moved past that, thankfully, and began to show a fierce attitude as the novel progressed. The last portion of the novel had some great action. It’s worth reading, just be patient with a slow start.

This book packs an emotional punch, especially if you’ve experienced childhood trauma (particularly abuse and/or neglect). Alexandra creates these three strong protectors who love her and will do anything to make her feel happy and safe. She started out drawing them when she was a small child, and then transitioned to stories as she grew up. Lucien, Elwin, and Kylo look frightening in their monster forms, but it’s clear that they would never hurt Alexandra, and she has never felt afraid of them. They have very distinct personalities that we get to know better throughout the book. The love and devotion they have for Alexandra is sweet and unwavering. This is a fantastic and creative story! The world-building is wonderful - it’s a shared world with M. Sinclair, and takes place at a university for supernatural beings. The additional world-building within Alexandra’s story added even more depth and intrigue. The spicy times were 🥵 and it’s more of a medium burn, but it works with the characters and I expect that it’ll pick up quite a bit in the next books. Monsters Within has a unique way of addressing mental health issues that can come from being abused and neglected. There are some flashbacks to Alexandra’s childhood that provide some insight but they don’t go into heavy details. I absolutely adored this book and can’t wait for more!
