Het plezier bij  het proeven van Yquem is moeilijk te beschrijven. Het biedt een groot aantal uitgebalanceerde, complexe smaken die in de loop van de tijd nog meer harmonieën creëren. De indruk die overblijft doet denken aan een citaat van Frédéric Dard "de stilte die volgt na afloop van een stuk van Mozart, waarin de luisteraar doordrenkt blijft met de muziek". Dit weerspiegelt het feit dat Château d'Yquem opmerkelijk lang in de mond blijft en zorgt voor een uniek, langdurig genot. Er is een mooie uitdrukking in het Frans om de enorm lange afdronk van Yquem te beschrijven: il fait la queue du paon, wat betekent dat het zich uitspreidt over de tong als een pauwenstaart.

Jaargang 2021

Van juni tot september heerste er gematigd zomerweer, wat leidde tot een goede zuurgraad in de druiven. Twee periodes met regen half september en begin oktober zorgden voor een goede verspreiding van pourriture noble, en daarna bleef het zonnig, in deze periode verkregen de druiven veel concentratie. Het jaar 2021 komt heel puur en fris over.
