Description

The freshness and balance of a Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé.

The estate

Château Lagrange is one of the iconic references of the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate boasts ancient origins, dating back to the Gallo-Roman era when the site was home to the "Villa Rustica." Later, the Knights Templar initiated viticultural activity on the property. Château Lagrange experienced a golden age in the 18th century and was classified as a 3rd Growth in the Official Classification of 1855. In 1983, the estate was acquired by the Japanese group Suntory and its president, Keizo Saji. Following a significant renovation and investment program, combined with the arrival of a dynamic team, Château Lagrange reached the pinnacle of Médoc wines.

The vineyard

The 2021 Château Lagrange is a Saint-Julien wine from a single 118-hectare vineyard. The vineyard enjoys a superb location on two gravelly ridges. The vines, averaging 45 years old, are planted in siliceous-gravel soils with a clay-limestone subsoil. The vineyard's climate is temperate and oceanic.

The vintage

The year 2021 was marked by relatively low rainfall and persistent freshness throughout the growing season. Ideal conditions from early October allowed for refined ripening. With its freshness, aromatic profile, and balance, this vintage is reminiscent of those produced in the early 2000s.

The winemaking and aging

Hand-harvested grapes undergo an initial manual sorting followed by a second optical camera sorting. Parcel and intra-parcel selection. The 103 vineyard plots are vinified in 102 temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Temperature-controlled vinification includes gentle daily pump-overs, racking, or punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation is achieved through co-inoculation. The wine is aged for 21 months in barrels (50% new).

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (84%)

Merlot (14%)

Petit Verdot (2%)

Tasting

The wine has a beautiful deep color with purple reflections.

Nose

The nose releases delightful aromas of red fruits (strawberry, raspberry).

Palate

A soft and fleshy attack gives way to a palate that harmoniously combines elegance, power, and finely textured tannins.

Aging Potential

This Saint-Julien wine can be cellared until 2050.

Good finish, poor hardware.
Set screws are poor quality and are sometimes powdercoated on the exposed threads. Leads to striped hex sockets and inability to tighten properly. Durable finish as evidenced by no visible damage after throwing parts across the shop in frustration. Ended up running self tapping screws thru parts to complete assembly.
