Leraren en leerlingen denken vaak dat leren gemakkelijk moet zijn. Vraag maar eens aan collega's en kinderen wie de beste leerlingen zijn. De meesten wijzen dan leerlingen aan die ‘het gewoon doorhebben’, die ‘dingen weten zonder schijnbare moeite’, of die ‘van nature talent’ voor iets hebben. Maar dit zijn nu juist eigenschappen die niet met leren te maken hebben. Leren is meer een uitdaging.

 

Om diep te leren is het nodig dat je op de grens staat tussen weten en niet weten. Je erkent dat je bepaalde dingen nog niet weet, maar dat je die - met inzet en de juiste strategie -  wel te weten kunt komen. Soms betekent leren dat we moeten herordenen wat we al weten, of dat we bestaande kennis moeten loslaten om iets beter te begrijpen. Zoals Piaget zei: “Om te leren is onbalans nodig.” Dat wil zeggen dat je pas diep leert als hetgene wat je weet,  niet in balans is met wat je tegenkomt. Wanneer je denkt: ‘Hé, hoe zit dit, ik snap het niet’ of:  ‘Dit klopt toch niet?’, dan is de balans uit evenwicht en krijg je de kans om te leren en te groeien.

 

Daarom dien je als leraar situaties te creëren waarin leerlingen die onbalans ervaren. Je wilt twijfel zaaien, en de manier waarop leerlingen nadenken uitdagen met andere of betere ideeën. Dat doe je met de Leeruitdaging. Daarmee wordt leren een prikkelende en gezamenlijke inspanning van leerling en leraar. De Leerkuil vormt de kern van de Leeruitdaging. Je zit in de Leerkuil als je onopgeloste of tegenstrijdige ideeën hebt over datgene wat je probeert te begrijpen. Je maakt dan een cognitief conflict door. Door leerlingen uit te nodigen in de Leerkuil te stappen, daag je ze uit om te komen tot diep leren, met als doel het ontwikkelen van betekenisvolle, blijvende inzichten.

In dit boek werkt James Nottingham de Leeruitdaging uit in zeven stappen:

  1. Selecteer een concept.
  2. Vraag leerlingen naar hun ideeën over het concept.
  3. Zorg voor een cognitief conflict.
  4. Laat je leerlingen ideeën vergelijken en zoeken naar overeenkomsten en verschillen.
  5. Laat je leerlingen een denktool gebruiken om de ideeën te ordenen en te verbinden.
  6. Laat je leerlingen een zo doordacht mogelijke definitie van het concept geven.
  7. Kijk samen naar toepassingen van het geleerde en reflecteer op het leerproces.
