Aan de hand van mini-games die gebruik maken een geanimeerde uitleg weet je altijd wat je met de Wii afstandsbediening moet doen. Zo moet je gebruik maken van de bewegingsgevoeligheid in rivierraces, om een standbeeld door te midden slaan, om race auto`s te besturen en om te balanceren op een koord. Door op het scherm te richten kun je spookjes uit een huis jagen, of bv een taart versieren. Ook de luidspreker in de afstandsbediening speelt een rol in het spel.Mario Party 8 bevat bergen aan mini-games en zes party spelborden. Je kunt, voor het eerst in de Mario Party-reeks, je karakters van vorm veranderen. Zo kun je veranderen in gigantische stenen die andere spelers plat stampen of muntjeszuigende vampiers. Er zijn veertien verschillende karakters waarmee je kunt spelen, waaronder nieuwkomers zoals Hammer Bro en inktvis Blooper. Je kunt tijdens het spelen ook veel oude vrienden en vijanden tegenkomen die tot meer dan 20 jaar geleden in Mario-spellen voorkwamen.
