Symboliek en achtergrond

Elke kleur heeft zijn betekenis: blauw staat voor de lucht en de zee rond de eilanden, geel voor de zon, rood voor het volk en zijn vastberadenheid, wit voor sociale rechtvaardigheid en harmonie, en groen voor de natuurlijke rijkdommen. De vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 18 juni 1996 en combineert elementen uit de vlaggen van de twee belangrijkste politieke partijen van het land. Het unieke en kleurrijke ontwerp weerspiegelt de diversiteit en eenheid van de eilandnatie in de Indische Oceaan.
