This is a wonderful piece of Texas Ebony that captures the transition from heartwood to sapwood with some beautiful contrast between the darker and lighter colors. The grain runs roughly parallel to the long axis of the block and has sweeping curves along several of the faces. This piece has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. The "wet" photos give you a preview of the finished color of the Texas Ebony. We use alcohol to dampen the wood without affecting its dryness. This block does have several cracks as shown in the photos. These are common in Texas Ebony. We recommend treating those cracks with thin CA glue prior to turning. See close-up photos. |
