Description:

The story of the 'Dunera Boys' is an intrinsic part of the history
of Australia in the Second World War and in its aftermath. The injustice these
2000 men suffered through British internment in camps at Hay, Tatura and Orange
is well known. Less familiar is the tale of what happened to them afterwards. Following
on from volume one Dunera Lives: A Visual
History (2018), Dunera Lives:
Profiles continues the saga in life stories.

This second volume of Dunera Lives presents the voices, faces, and lives of
20 people, who, together with nearly 3000 other internees from Britain and
Singapore, landed in Australia in 1940. All over the world there were Dunera lives,
those of men and women who passed through the upheavals of the
Second World War and survived to tell the tale. Here are some of their stories.

A contribution to the history of Australia, to the history of
migrants and migration, and to the history of human rights, these two volumes
put in the public domain a story whose full dimensions and complexity have
never been described.

'In the way it traces the lives of 'Dunera boys'
before, during and after internment, Dunera Lives: Profiles is narrative
history in one of its most engaging and moving forms.'—Raimond Gaita

2 for 1!
Two iterations of an Ernest Hemingway classic short story. Burt Lancaster kicks it off with the 1946 version followed by the Lee Marvin led 1964 version. Both are great and plenty of criterion extras making this among my favorite spine in their awesome collection. There’s also a Russian student take on the short story adding a third version of a great story. Highly recommended and if it’s 50% a must buy. I already owned it and gave this as a gift who instantly called me two days later with high praise of the films.

A Favorite All-Time Classic
I've always enjoyed this classic film. Ava Gardner is my favorite all-time actress. She's great in the role of Kitty. Burt Lancaster is also fine as the torn man in love with a woman he struggles to have. This is based on one of Hemingway's short stories, and they did a fine job. Same with the remake in 1964 with Lee Marvin and Clu Gulagher. You will not be disappointed in either version, but my favorite is the orignal.

1 Ernest Hemingway story, 2 different movie takes, very cool.
I like value. Two movie versions of a cool story for the price of one, I am in. The Burt Lancaster version is film noir cool, while the Lee Marvin has that manic 60’s television feel. The Lee Marvin version gets bonus for Ronald Reagan’s portrayal of the heavy. He is quite menacing.
