FAQ GCSE Combined Science:

How are grades awarded for Combined Science?
Combined Science is a dual-award qualification meaning it is equal to 2 GCSEs. You will be awarded a double grade, for example 7-7 (2 grade 7’s) or 7-6 (A grade 7 and a grade 6). The grade is based on your average mark across the 6 papers that are taken and does not show that you are better at any of the three Sciences. The grades will always be the same or different by one, in other words it is not possible to get a grade 7-5 for example.

What is the difference between Foundation and Higher tier?
If you sit Foundation tier the maximum grade you can achieve is a 5-5. The questions on Foundation tier will not cover some of the more complex scientific concepts. Higher tier allows you to get a grades from 4-3 to 9-9 but if you do not get sufficient marks for a grade 4-3 you will be awarded a U grade for unclassified. Please ensure that you chose the correct level when completing the application process.

Do I need additional equipment for the exams?
All answers must be written in black pen. For GCSE Combined Science you may use a HB pencil for graphs and diagrams. You should also ensure that you have a protractor, ruler and an eraser. A basic scientific calculator which meets JCQ regulations is the best option for GCSE Combined Science, if the calculator has any memory capacity this must be cleared before the exam and the calculator should have no formulae or other information on it.

Why is there an option that includes practicals?
A key part of any Science is the development of practical skills and as such the GCSE Combined Science specifications require that any students taking GCSE Combined Science have had the opportunity to develop and implement these skills. We recognise that this is not something that is readily accessible to home-schooled students so have developed a three-day practical skills course that covers the required practicals specified by the exam boards and equips students with these valuable practical skills.

I haven't completed the GCSE science subjects practical activities, am I required to do them?
The specification states “Practical activities must be carried out by all students taking GCSE science subjects for the first time”. Students won’t be assessed whilst conducting their practical work, but the written exam will include questions on it. Therefore, candidates lacking hands on experience will be at an immediate disadvantage. For candidates retaking the GCSE science subjects with the current specification, the practical activities are optional.
