Historical background:

The ultimate goal of the US Army at this stage is to improve all M1 series tanks into the M1A2SEP type. SEP stands for System Enhanced Package in English.
The US Army Tank, Automotive, and Ordnance Command has announced that the Ground Systems Division of General Dynamics, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, has been awarded a contract worth $22.4 million.
The company will repair and upgrade 111 M1A2 SEP "Abrams" main battle tanks.
This work was carried out at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio and was completed before July 30, 2005. The upgraded tank is equipped with the US Army's 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.
