Through it all, one thing that has persisted is its uncanny, liminal quality.
As well as being a social history and a psychogeographic contemplation, Blue Lake is a biography of three specific characters- Elsie Williams, a Bendigo-born singer of Afro-Caribbean origin; Jack Peacock, the king of Dudley Flats' tip-scavenging economy; and Lauder Heinrich Rogge, a German hermit who lived for decades with sixty dogs on a stranded ship. By charting the rises and falls in their individual fortunes, Sornig reveals much about the race and class divides of their times and explores questions about those strange and singular places in the urban fabric where chaos is difficult to contain.
In masterful prose, Sornig reveals cracks in the colonial mythology of the ordered vision of progressive, urban Melbourne - a place where identities, both personal and public, have never quite been resolved. In doing so, he encourages readers to look harder at the places they live in - at the streets they walk, the buildings they enter, the empty spaces they pass - and to see in them intricate layers of time and history that have been hidden from view.

Great tool for SAT vocab
I usually don't write reviews but this book has impressed me so much that I have to write one! I would like to thank the author for creating such a helpful book for learning SAT vocab words. Grouping the words together, writing sentences for each word, and exercises to practice them are all awesome ways for remembering vocab.

Life changing
Format: Paperback
This book completely blew my mind as it broadened my horizons on the opportunities to be found in real estate investing from the other side of the transaction...as the lender rather than the borrower. I'd always had some ill-defined goals around real estate investing that I never seemed to get around to. I finally decided to push past my malaise and start educating myself in earnest. Around the same time I started land lording for my father's recent purchase of a 4-plex in Panama Central America. And I quickly realized that while I loved the general idea of real estate as a wealth building strategy, I didn't want to deal with tenants in my long-run real estate investing journey. Then I happened across a post about the forthcoming book from Beth and Alex and I immediately got the sense that I had found my future niche. The book did not disappoint. I was so inspired and saw myself in so much of Beth and Alex's stories about how they came upon private money lending and how/why it fits into their lives. I am an expat living abroad and want to be able to run my real estate business from anywhere in the world without having to deal with tenants, toilets, or termites. Feeling fully inspired and mission-aligned with the idea of private money lending, I delved into the nitty gritty. The book provides just the right amount of detail and actionable information without being overwhelming. I'll stop writing so you can go order the book and start reading IT instead of this review. You won't be disappointed...even if you pursue some other aspect of real estate investing you will understand both sides of the lending transaction more holistically and walk away a better investor.
