Throwing back to the late '50s, the term "oil can delay" was first coined for a type of miniaturized tape delay that was housed in a tuna can-shaped casing. This casing, a drum containing oil, featured a special disk apparatus on which audio signal charges would be written and read, effectively creating an electro-static analog delay effect.
Today's 3 Series Oil Can Delay offers up a classic oil can delay tone – a murky analog delay with plenty of modulated DNA to get classic, throwback '50s and '60s-type delay effects. The effect is laid out simply like all other 3 Series effects with three parameter controls and an additional tone switch. Onboard, we have Mix, Speed, and Feedback – your usual delay effect control settings. Mix will control the amount of the effect in the signal, Speed lengthens or shortens time between repeats, and Feedback controls the number of repeats in the signal, easy right?
Where the Oil Can Delay dips into its unique character is with its toggle switch that allows you to switch between modulation intensities. Switched down, your oil can modulation will be more shallow and soft, switched up and your modulation will be more drastic. The Oil Can Delay's modulation speed correlates with the delay's Speed control – shorter is faster and longer is slower.
This Oil Can Delay also features a secret mode that can be accessed by zeroing out all three controls and switching the Modulation switch downwards. Once the LED light is blinking, you'll have access to a more experimental and outrageous delay, akin to a multi-head delay that inspires wilder and more spacey sounds.
With a wonderfully vintage sound and seamlessly worked interface, the 3 Series Oil Can Delay is everything you need and nothing you don't for an iconic vintage tone.
