ABOUT THE ARTFORM
Phad painting or phad is a style of religious scroll painting, practiced in the Rajasthan. This style of painting is traditionally done on a long piece of cloth or canvas, known as phad. The narratives of the folk deities of Rajasthan, mostly of Pabuji and Devnarayan are depicted on the phads.

The Bhopas or the priest-singers traditionally carry the painted phads along with them and use these as the mobile temples of the folk deities, who are worshipped by the Rebari community of the region. The phads of Pabuji are normally about 15 feet (4.6 m) in length, while the phads of Devnarayan are normally about 30 feet long. Traditionally the phads are painted with vegetable colors.

WHAT WE LEARN
In this workshop, we understand the legend of Pabuji, his life story, characters of the story and their representation and composition technique.
We start from the basics of sketching and gradually ove on to create a composition involving different episodes from the life of Pabuji.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Abhishek Joshiji is a traditional Phad artist from Shahpura belonging to the Joshi clan, who started and still continue the tradition of painting Phads. He has his name recognised in various record books for painting the longest handmade painting in natural colors.
